The victory of the opposition in Hungary yesterday, like the Polish election in 2023, is a victory for democracy, not just in Europe but around the world. Most of all, it’s a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people – and a reminder to all of us to keep striving for fairness, equality and the rule of law.

As citizens and believers in this democracy that we cherish so deeply, we must advocate for peace with our representatives and leaders. “It is not enough to say we have prayed. We must also act. Those who pray are aware of their own limitations; they do not kill or threaten with death. I doubt Pope Leo XIV will lose any sleep over this, before he begins his pilgrimage to Africa tomorrow. But the rest of us should. Because it is unhinged, uncharitable and unchristian. Is there no bottom to this moral squalor?

I assume Orban conceded because the opposition's victory is too staggeringly large to deny. It's important for us to remember that, were he in Orban's position, Trump would never concede, no matter how large the margin.
