A Harvard psychiatrist studied 15 prisoners kept alone in their cells for weeks or months at a time. 14 developed the same mental breakdown: hallucinations, paranoia, panic, brain fog they couldn't shake. Stuart Grassian published this in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 1983 and called it SHU Syndrome, after the Special Housing Units prisons use for isolation. When prisoners left solitary, most of those symptoms faded. The cell was doing it to them. Brain scans show the damage too. In 2019, researchers at Charité Berlin and the University of Pennsylvania scanned the brains of nine people before and after a 14-month stay at a remote Antarctic research station. The hippocampus shrank by 7 percent on average. That part of your brain handles memory and how you find your way around. The prefrontal cortex (planning, self-control) also lost volume. And BDNF, a protein that helps brain cells grow and form new connections, dropped sharply and still hadn't recovered six weeks after the team came home.
