A massive nuclear waste tomb in the Pacific is beginning to crack and leak.
The Runit Dome, constructed in the late 1970s on a remote island in the Marshall Islands, was built to contain over 120,000 tons of radioactive debris left behind by U.S. nuclear testing. Among the waste is plutonium-239, a highly dangerous isotope that remains radioactive for more than 24,000 years.
The dome stretches roughly 377 feet (115 meters) across and was never properly sealed at the base. Instead, it rests directly on porous coral, allowing groundwater to flow freely beneath it.
Now, rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms are stressing the structure. Cracks have formed in the concrete, and scientists have already detected elevated radiation levels in the surrounding soil and water.
While the current leaks are still considered relatively minor, experts warn that as oceans continue to rise, the risk of a much larger release will grow.
Built as a temporary fix decades ago, the Runit Dome now stands as a stark reminder: the radioactive waste sealed inside it will remain hazardous long after our civilizations are gone.

BREAKING: HALLELUJAH! A federal judge rules that the Trump administration MUST allow clergy members into an ICE facility in Broadview for Holy Week and Easter — destroying the MAGA effort to cut migrants off from their religion.
This is another massive victory for Pope Leo XIV who has been calling for this access...
“The religious interests far outweigh any interest the government has articulated,” said U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman.
The government has been restricting access to the migrants for clergy despite them historically having more consistent access to the facility. It's clear that the administration is hoping to demoralize these migrants by cutting them off from their faith, a deeply cruel thing for a so-called Christian president to support.
Additionally, Judge Gettleman ruled that people must be allowed to pray outside the facility while on federal property. The decision comes after an alliance of faith leaders filed a lawsuit back in November asking the judge to ensure that clergy were given access.
"We're going to be asked, you know, how did you receive the foreigner?" Pope Leo said back in November after agents refused to allow faith leaders into the Broadview facility to distribute holy communion. "Did you receive him and welcome him or not? And I think that there's a deep reflection that needs to be made in terms of what's happening. Many people who've lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what's going on right now."
“I would certainly invite the authorities to allow pastoral workers to attend to the needs of those people,” he added. “Many times they’ve been separated from their families for a good amount of time; no one knows what’s happening, but their own spiritual needs should be attended to.”
The lawsuit from the faith leaders argued that the restrictions on clergy visiting were a clear violation of the right to practice one's religion.
“The plaintiffs are kind of at a loss as to why the government is taking such a hard line,” said Thomas Geoghegan, an attorney representing the faith leaders.
“The Pope himself urged the government to allow … clergy in this case to minister to detainees at Broadview,” he added.
We commend the judge for making the right decision. Migrants deserve to practice their faith just like anyone else in this country!
Please ❤️ and share to thank the judge!
