IBM has agreed to pay more than $17 million to settle allegations it engaged in discriminatory hiring, promotions, and bonus practices based on race, sex, and national origin — including using a “diversity modifier” tied to demographic targets. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche called it illegal for government contractors to repackage racial discrimination as DEI, marking the first resolution under the DOJ’s new Civil Rights Fraud Initiative. IBM will pay over $8 million in restitution and has already terminated the offending programs.
