This organization is a pretty outrageous grift that’s all too typical of how things work today in the North Carolina state legislature. "Parents for Educational Freedom" (@PEFNC) is a special interest pressure group that campaigns against public schools - and they are almost completely funded by us, the taxpayers of North Carolina. Here’s how the scam works. In 2023, Republicans in our state legislature passed a massive expansion of their religious private school voucher scheme. They included a $1,000,000 line item in annually recurring funds earmarked to fund a marketing campaign for their vouchers. (There isn’t enough organic demand - they have to advertise.) They directed the contract for that marketing campaign to PEFNC, a far-right conservative group that opposes public education. Today, the staff of PEFNC spends a million of North Carolina taxpayers’ dollars every single year bashing public schools and teachers, and lobbying our legislature to divert more of funding to vouchers instead. This is a good real-world example of how North Carolinians’ taxpayer money is misused and hijacked by corrupt politicians to advance partisan politics that help their friends. It’s very similar to the anti-abortion “pregnancy crisis center” scam, which works in much the same way.
