This #NationalVolunteerWeek, we're giving a shoutout to Mary and Alisha, two wonderful women who developed a meaningful friendship through their volunteer work at NBCF. They began their volunteer shifts as strangers, each driven by their personal connection to breast cancer—Mary's daughter is a survivor and Alisha's mother passed away from breast cancer. They quickly became volunteer besties, checking in on each other weekly and sharing moments of laughter and friendship when they're together. Witnessing these two become close friends has been such a privilege and motivates us to continue working hard to support women and families impacted by breast cancer. 💗 #IGiveHope

Alva no tenía síntomas, pero confió en su intuición. After one of Alva's sisters underwent a mammogram due to a lump, Alva was encouraged to perform a breast self-exam, where she also felt a lump. She quickly scheduled a mammogram, out of concern for her family history of cancer (her father had brain and prostate cancer, and her mother had thyroid cancer). Her results came back abnormal, which led to a biopsy. Because Alva has no health insurance and didn't qualify for her state's screening coverage, she paid for these procedures out of pocket, which maxed out her credit card. After her biopsy came back positive, Alva knew she needed an MRI—another costly expense that she couldn't afford. Through NBCF's National Mammography Program, Alva's MRI was covered at the partner facility where she received her screenings, and she was able to start breast cancer treatment shortly after. Alva shares: "I just want to thank National Breast Cancer Foundation with all my heart for helping me through this process, which has been so hard for me and my family. I thank God for allowing me to realize it in time, since I didn't have any symptoms." Su historia es un recordatorio poderoso: no necesitas tener síntomas para actuar. La detección temprana puede salvar vidas, y el acceso a programas como el Programa Nacional de Mamografías puede hacer toda la diferencia.

Although breast cancer itself doesn't cause infertility, treatment options can. This month and every month, our hearts are with the community members facing infertility. We see you, we hear you, and we grieve with you. 💗 #NationalInfertilityMonth We're here to support you. Learn more about breast cancer and fertility at nbcf.org/fertility

March is Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Month. #TripleNegativeBreastCancer (TNBC) is a rare yet fast-growing and aggressive cancer that accounts for approximately 10-15% of all breast cancer cases. Because of its tendency to grow and spread quickly, it is important to understand what TNBC is, its signs and symptoms, and the options available to treat it. Share this post with your friends to share these key facts: Triple-negative breast cancer is rare, accounting for approximately 10-15% of all breast cancer diagnoses in the United States. TNBC is more common in women under 40 years old than other types of breast cancer. The average age of a TNBC diagnosis is 54, compared to 60 for other breast cancers. Those with a BRCA1 gene mutation are more likely to develop triple-negative breast cancer than other types of breast cancer. About 10-15% of women with TNBC test positive for a BRCA1 gene mutation. TNBC community, let us know: what's the best way friends and loved ones can support you during a diagnosis and beyond? 💗

"I first noticed a lump in my breast and mentioned it to a medical friend while attending a breast cancer awareness event in October. She suggested that many Black women have lumpy breast tissue and told me not to worry. However, as the lump grew, it became painful—to the point where I would cringe when hugged too tight. I called my PCP and had an appointment the day after Christmas, where she ordered a 3D mammogram and ultrasound. I had those scans the next day, followed by a biopsy the next Monday. I received the call on New Year's Eve confirming it was breast cancer. My message to the Black community is to KNOW YOUR BODY! If you feel something, seek medical treatment right away. Not all Black women have 'lumpy' breasts, and early detection saves lives." Meet our friend Dee, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer in December 2024. Six months after completing aggressive chemotherapy, Dee joined us for a glam and photo session made possible by our friends at Colossal Impact. She shares: "At the time, I was feeling unattractive due to hair loss and the lingering effects of treatment, but the experience was transformative. From the warm welcome to the wardrobe styling and the wig fitting, I felt like a blossoming flower. Walking the runway made me feel like I was a model. It was a lifetime memory that provided me with a level of positivity and encouragement I hadn't felt in a long time. Thank you, NBCF, for such an amazing experience."

Have you scheduled your mammogram for this year yet? Through our National Mammography Program, women in need can receive free mammograms and diagnostic services at partner facilities throughout the country. Our friend Zayda, who received support from our partner @mhshospitals, shares: “My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40s. Mammograms are very expensive, but because of the National Mammography Program, I was able to start taking care of my health early. It is wonderful that they help provide access to everyone. I am so grateful.”
