The NFL's plans for using replacement officials, if needed in 2026, include a significant shift toward centralized officiating from NYC. Also, in a statement, NFL exec Jeff Miller said the league has been "compelled" to begin contingency planning. STORY: espn.com/nfl/story/_/id…

The Vikings have indeed re-signed QB Carson Wentz. Given the depth issues they've faced at the position in 2023, and again in 2025, they want to minimize the risk of having an inexperienced QB on the field in 2026.

NFLRA's Scott Green brought up two concerns: 1) Increased vulnerability to gambling concerns with replacement officials 2) Enforcement of player safety rules when size and speed of game will be unfamiliar, to say the least

Several years ago the Players stood with the officials when they were locked out an was prepared to file a grievance that the NFL’s removal of the experienced and on-field first responders created an unreasonable health and safety risk. Still the right thing to do.

Nothing creates more interest in the NFL than trades. This is why Cleveland’s proposal to allow teams to trade picks up to 5 years out as opposed to 3 years out makes so much sense. More picks to trade = more trades = more interest & team building options.

If it seems like there have been more trades than ever, there have been. Since the 2026 new league year started last week, there have been 18 trades, including Andy Dalton today. From the day the 2025 new league year started until the NFL Draft, there were 15 trades. One week of the league year this year already has produced three more trades than there were over weeks last year.

I wrote "right-sizing" -- but the Vikings have never used it in any conversation I've had. It was intended unironically, without reference to other teams cutting back payroll for cashflow reasons. This was coming for the Vikings at some point, based on their 2024-25 spending.
