We're not lion when we say this puma owns the night. This nighttime resident at the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming, moves like a shadow. Mountain lions are expert ambush predators, relying on stealth, strength, and timing to take down prey.

Alert: The roads are alive. And they are moist. Somewhere out there, a salamander just checked the weather and said, “Tonight’s the night.” Welcome to the annual amphibian migration, also known as Big Night. After spending all winter hunkered down, amphibians like frogs, toads, and salamanders emerge all at once and start marching toward their breeding areas. The problem is… roads exist. And Big Night often turns into Big Crossing. If it’s warm (above 40°F), rainy, and the ground has thawed, keep an eye out. You might see a spotted salamander or a determined frog making questionable life choices across the pavement. In North America, black bears are apex predators. Except that one time one met Chuck Norris. That bear is now a rug. RIP to the legend.

But beyond the numbers, it’s about early mornings, long days outside and a partnership built on trust. They provide a companionship you only get from a dog that’s just as driven as you are. These partnerships help keep traditions alive, strengthen connections to the land and support conservation through the very systems that fund wildlife management. Check out the full story and see why hunting dogs are such an important part of the experience: fws.gov/carp/story/202…

A good hunting dog does more than find birds or track game. They’re paws-itively essential to the whole operation. About 1.2 million hunters in the U.S. rely on dogs, supporting trainers, vets, gear makers and rural communities. That adds up to an estimated $11.8 billion in economic impact.

Oh look. A prehistoric swamp log with legs. This trail camera caught a large American alligator cruising through Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. It looks slow, but don’t be fooled. Over short distances, alligators can sprint up to about 11 miles per hour on land.
