From what is gradually emerging, Qatar’s role in the Iran-US talks now appears to be complementing that of the so-called “quartet” (Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey) which launched the broader Islamabad process and met in the Pakistani capital on March 29. - Tehran may have encouraged a greater role for Doha in order to diversify the mediation architecture. While Islamabad still appears to remain the main intermediary and the key backchannel with Washington, some Iranian IRGC circles reportedly became uneasy with perceptions that Islamabad was becoming too closely aligned with Trump and his entourage. Expanding Qatar’s role would therefore allow Tehran to maintain the Pakistani channel while multiplying additional channels into the US administration. - This also fits a broader regional logic. Alongside Oman, Qatar has long served as one of Tehran’s preferred interlocutors in the Persian Gulf on sensitive regional issues. And while Iran still values its strategic relationship with Pakistan, it simultaneously needs to repair and rebalance ties with the Arabs of the Persian Gulf after the war. Doha is well positioned to facilitate that process. - Seen in this context, Tehran’s decision to reportedly authorize today the passage of a Qatari LNG tanker through the Strait of Hormuz may not be accidental. And perhaps it is not entirely coincidental that the LNG shipment was reportedly destined for Pakistan itself. #Iran #IranWar

I spoke with Vatican News about settler terrorism against Palestinians and Christian communities in the West Bank. Nearly a year ago, I also gave another interview to Vatican News, where I warned that if the Israeli settlers who attacked the Christian village of Taybeh and set fire to the church were not held accountable — and if Christian leaders and churches failed to exert stronger pressure — these attacks would continue to escalate. Sadly, that warning has now become reality. Israeli settlers have not only continued their assaults, but are now establishing new illegal outposts around Christian towns such as Taybeh and Beit Sahour, while threatening to kill Christian residents who attempt to access their land. This is why @JasonJonesVPP and I launched the Save West Bank Christians campaign, savewestbankchristians.com — to document every attack against Christians in the Holy Land, expose escalating settler terrorism, and ensure the world can no longer stay silent while the oldest Christian community on earth faces a campaign of ethnic cleansing. carried out by Israeli settlers and enabled by Israeli government policies.

Ben Gvir ran on making Palestinian prisoners suffer. He implemented it. A journalist held for a year, released without charge, never once questioned about the allegation used to justify his detention. He lost 130 pounds. No one can argue this makes Israel safer. There’s no security rationale here, just a policy designed to punish.

Rajiv Menon, King’s Council, barrister for a member of the Filton 6, is being legally attacked by the state - for “contempt of court”, carrying a punishment of up to two years imprisonment. What has he done? He mentioned in his closing speech the legal history and principles of law that allow juries to make independent decisions on conscience that Judge Johnson ruled out. In the first trial’s closing statement to the jury, Menon pointed out the case that established this principle from 1670 and quoted the public plaque outside the Old Bailey (the central court in London) commemorating the case. He also reminded the jurors six times that the judge could not direct them to convict. That it is illegal for the judge to order the jury to reach a guilty verdict. And yet that is essentially what the judge was trying to do. The jury exonerated all the defendants in that first trial. Now they have been retried and convicted on some charges. It seems that Rajiv Menon KC is being punished for being good at his job; for explaining the actual law relevant to the rights of the jury [that this judge, close to the UK police and security services unethically suppressed to secure a political conviction to protect Elbit Systems. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that Judge Johnson set up the rules and judgments precisely to engineer a conviction to circumvent the propensity of juries to acquit actionists. He now plans to sentence them under extremely harsh terrorism laws by manipulating unjustly what jurors could know. Rajiv Menon initially disrupted that plan in the first trial. So now the judge and state are going after him. The very act of retrial until conviction is inherently unjust. We must support Rajiv Menon and the actionists against the UK state’s punitive crackdown on those using democratic rights to protest and stop the Israeli arms industry from facilitating war crimes, illegal occupation and genocide. The imperialist system UK has shown themselves willing to discard all paper “democratic rights” rights - to free speech, assembly, jury trials, press freedom. All to allow their murderous wars and genocides in Palestine, across the Middle East, Ukraine, Africa and Latin America to continue unimpeded by the will of the British workers. Learn well: we can expect no justice from the hand of the capitalist oppressor. We will fight with any tool that comes to hand. But in the last analysis these tyrants must be overthrown. Force is the only language they speak.

I think people have different ideas about what journalism is supposed to be. For some, it means pursuing the most accurate explanation of events, investigating critically, speaking truth to power, and, in the American context, serving as a kind of “fourth branch” that exposes corruption, abuse, and official misconduct while keeping powerful institutions in check. For others, journalism is more centered on access: cultivating elite sources, getting insider scoops, and maintaining relationships with officials and power centers. That often creates pressure to present narratives in ways those sources find acceptable in order to preserve that access. These approaches are not entirely mutually exclusive, and many journalists navigate elements of both. But in my experience, they generally represent two broad and often competing models of how the profession is practiced.

One of the more interesting aspects of today’s front page from the IRGC-linked newspaper Javan (which I add here) is not the usual propaganda tone, but the narrative structure behind it. - As you can see below, the paper essentially argues that the sudden US media focus on UFOs and “flying saucers” is serving as a distraction from the real story unfolding in the Persian Gulf: a costly and unresolved confrontation in which, from Tehran’s perspective, the US failed to impose full strategic control despite its overwhelming military superiority. - Even the imagery looks carefully constructed. Trump is shown escaping inside a flying saucer while IRGC fast boats dominate the waters below. One can read the message: when conventional pressure fails to produce a decisive outcome, attention shifts toward media cycles and psychological framing. - The satirical cover offers a useful window into how the Iranian hardline establishment currently interprets the confrontation with Washington: not as an American show of strength, but as a struggle over perception, narrative management, and political optics after a strategic stalemate in the Persian Gulf. #Iran #IranWar

Rajiv Menon was my barrister when I appeared before the Tribunal investigating police surveillance of left and women's groups. His opening speech was brilliant. He is on of this country's most gifted barristers, a descendant of Mike Mansfield. His prosecution is an appalling instance of some judges prostrating themselves before the needs of the state as they did a number of times against Irish and Muslim prisoners. One hope they might have learnt from how they treated the Irish. Doesn't seem to be the case.

It may not be fully appreciated that the UK is not only seeing unprecedented treatment of direct action protestors as “terrorists”, but a lawyer representing them is himself being prosecuted for his remarks in court. Here his fellow lawyers explain what is happening and express solidarity. A crucial case for justice and the rule of law in the UK.
