On one level, this seems entirely unnecessary. The Pope undoubtedly wields influence and authority, but he doesn’t have many legions. And we’re used to religious figures vaguely condemning war.
Seemingly, the Trump people don’t just want to “put the Vatican in its place” (mostly unnecessary), they want the Vatican on their side!
The Bush era featured the evangelical Protestants as die-hard supporters of the terror war and Americanism. Now, it seems, Trumpworld wants the Vatican to join some sort of “Trad Alliance of the Based,” which might very well include “Orthodox Russia.”
I’m no Catholic, but I genuinely like and admire Papa Bob from the South Side, and I expect him to resist this arrangement.
