@thestope No, bricking the device is when Vanguard Trojan digs into the firmware of PCIE and SATA devices and corrupts them, requiring a manual reflash, or at the least, a reinstall of your OS and some data recovery.

Well, that escalated quickly. There’s been a wave of claims by cheaters about Vanguard “bricking” their PCs, so let’s clear that up: Vanguard does not damage hardware or disable your devices. The photo we posted is a picture of cheat hardware devices that are sold explicitly for cheating in VALORANT (not normal PCs or PC components). Through our latest updates, Vanguard now makes those devices worthless for VAL, but does not in any way brick PCs or PC components or PC software. Our latest update enforces standard platform security features, like the Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU), on accounts identified as using Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheating devices. These protections are already part of modern systems and when enabled, they block DMA cheat devices (such as those shown in the photo) from accessing memory in downstream applications, like our games. If a cheat setup continues attempting to cheat after those protections are enabled, the system may generate hardware faults or instability. This is expected behavior under IOMMU when attempts are made to read protected memory. Disabling IOMMU allows the cheat device to function again, but IOMMU will still be required to play our games. This means the cheat device won’t work with our games, but your PC isn’t “bricked.” We would not, and cannot, impact your PC’s functionality in any other fashion. This functionality only applies to systems attempting to use DMA cheat devices, and players who are not using DMA-based cheat setups are not affected. We’ll keep investing in anti-cheat to protect competitive integrity, and we’ll keep being as transparent as possible about how those systems work.

@DonkFast @ManaByte Yes, but it isn't affecting normal DMA devices. It isn't even touch the firmware of the device in question. There is 0% chance you aren't using AI, you are clueless to how any of this even works. You are just spouting off random nonsense.

"Bricking someone's hardware" is a wild way to say "Vanguard enabled a standard Windows security feature that blocks unauthorized memory access." If a player takes the shady DMA cheat card out of their motherboard, the PC boots perfectly fine. Riot didn't fry their circuits; they just put a lock on a door. And please stop using "false positives" as a shield for people who bought literal hardware exploits. A standard gaming PC doesn't accidentally grow a Direct Memory Access card running custom spoofed firmware. If your PC got flagged by this update, you didn't accidentally download a bad patch; you spent $300 to cheat at a video game and got caught. Nice try though.
bubbles@NoLimits057

No company should be legally allowed to brick someone’s hardware. And for the people saying this could help stop cheaters — false positives exist. That means legitimate players could end up having their hardware disabled or flagged despite doing nothing wrong.

@sliver22 @ManaByte I don't use AI for my posts. it doesn't "destroy" partitions. However, SSD's and other storage devices are usually SATA or NVME, which use DMA and access the game. Vanguard messes with the firmware and usually causes a bricked system due to corrupt data.

@DonkFast @ManaByte Good lord I don't like Vanguard either, but you people spitting out random garbage you chatgpt'd without actually understanding what you are talking about is ridiculous. Vanguard is invasive, I agree. But no, it doesn't destroy partitions.

@DonkFast @angelroom0 they literally are not malware as every user downloads them for this exact purpose. we dont want cheaters in our games we fully welcome this changes. honestly i hope cheaters get arrested and get jailtime along with never being able to own a pc again. so they are getting off easy

They do have a panel. They can manually trigger vanguard's built in trojan if you get "Banned", and your system WILL be bricked. It's not just a manual reinstall, Vanguard digs into the firmware of ALL DMA devices. That's every single PCIE card you have connected, and also your hard drives / SSDs connected via SATA or NVME. Sure, you can reflash the firmware of your GPU or other pcie device if vanguard trojan messed it up, but you need an external device for this. Also, once your ssd's firmware has been bricked, all your data is gone / unrecoverable. Again, you can reflash the firmware with an external tool, reinstall windows and such, but your data is still wiped. Viruses don't usually damage hardware. Firmware isn't hardware. Riot themselves said this.

@Dovah_Spy What they did isn't bricking, it just requires a system reinstall. But in theory such a thing might be possible. Though I don't think that they have some kind of panel that allows to manually do such things. Either way, the game sucks and still full of cheaters, what's the point?

You have been sorely misinformed. Vanguard trojan has the ability to wipe hard disk partitions and firmware since they are SATA devices and interact with DMA (many cases of this actually happening). Vanguard, upon triggering, also digs into the firmware of PCIE devices, rendering them useless unless you have the knowhow to manually reflash them. Do you even know what you're talking about when it comes to the debug device? They are used by security professionals worldwide, and they don't cost 6,000$.

@Dovah_Spy no, the cheaters are spinning this as full bricking of pcs. Riot has made it so that if vanguard recognizes youre using this cheat device im your pc you cannot play any riot games game. the cheaters are LYING to make riot look bad when theyre spending 6k to cheat on ONLY valorant

@ShacoMidLane @Dovah_Spy False. They brick your windows install by messing up partitions. They also dig into the firmware of PCIE devices, making firmware updates impossible, and requiring a manual reflash. Viruses don't "Damage" your hardware physically, do they?

@Dovah_Spy They cannot. If they brick your PC this gives rise to claims under consumer protection law. They merely prevent access to their games, the hardware is not destroyed or damaged in any way.

@DonkFast @SilvaniKillian Even erring on the low end with 1 million daily reports, riot would need 34k employees dedicated to sifting through 30 reports daily. That's 7x the size of riot games globally. And that's not including the valorant playerbase.

@DTNonsense @riotgames Why don't you go and install vanguard on your main system then? Let me know how it goes and when you get banned for having python or LM studio open. And if you don't then just wait until, Riot switches Vanguard to combat mode.
