Trump has proposed a $1.5 trillion defense budget — a 40% increase, the largest since WWII. In exchange for more war he wants to: -Cut the EPA budget by half -Cut $10.7 billion for housing -Cut $8.5 billion for K-12 programs -Cancel $15 billion for clean energy -Cut $2.5 billion for clean drinking water -Eliminate $1.6 billion for youth job training -Cut $3.5 billion from the Labor Department -Eliminate $395 million for senior employment -Eliminate $775 million in food assistance grants -Eliminate the National Endowment for Democracy -Cut $5 billion from the National Institutes of Health -Eliminate the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) In all, cuts to domestic programs would account for a 10% reduction in discretionary spending.

Palestinian activist Leqaa Kordia, recently freed after more than a year at an immigration jail in Texas, describes the brutal conditions inside. "ICE dungeons are … built to break people mentally, to break people down, to make you give up, to make you beg to be deported."

On this day in 2009, Iowa became one of the first places in the US to legalise same-sex marriage. The decision came via the landmark Varnum v. Brien ruling, in which the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. Within days of the ruling, nearly 400 couples applied for marriage licences, with many granted waivers to wed immediately in impromptu ceremonies on the steps of public buildings. Just two other states in the US, Massachusetts and Connecticut, recognised same-sex marriage at the time. Days later, Vermont became the first to legalise same-sex marriage through a legislative vote. It would take another six years for marriage equality to be recognised nationwide in the US. 📷 Getty

Nazi-era fears about gender gave rise to sex testing. Now, the policy is resurfacing. On March 26, the International Olympic Committee announced that all athletes competing in women’s sports will be required to undergo genetic eligibility testing. Claiming to be concerned with “fairness” and “the protection of the female category,” the IOC aims to ban transgender women from future Olympic games by screening for the SRY gene, which is usually found on the Y chromosome. The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles will be the first games with this policy in effect. For queer historian and writer Michael Waters, the IOC’s announcement elicited a feeling of déjà vu: The institution has employed similar gender verification rules before—only to abandon them amid public backlash. In his 2024 book, The Other Olympians: Fascism, Queerness, and the Making of Modern Sports, Waters traces the history of trans athletes in the early 20th century, showing how a World War II–era moral panic around gender expression directly informs today’s anti-trans attacks. Mother Jones' Schuyler Mitchell spoke with Waters about his book, the history of sex testing in international sports, and how the IOC’s latest policy marks a return to a discriminatory model of gender surveillance that draws from a dark eugenic past. Tens of thousands of dollars for a handmade Japanese flute. More tens of thousands for fruit basket stands. Even more tens of thousands for sushi prep tables. While four million Americans face losing food assistance, the Pentagon recently had its largest single-month spending spree ever recorded. And they're still asking for more.

On this day in 2001: the first legal same-sex marriages took place in Amsterdam. Just after midnight on April 1, 2001 history was made in Amsterdam as the world’s first legal same-sex marriages were officiated at City Hall. Led by then-mayor Job Cohen, four couples said “I do” in a ceremony that marked the beginning of marriage equality worldwide. The Netherlands had passed landmark legislation the year before, becoming the first country to fully legalise same-sex marriage and adoption. 📷 Getty

You might know May Mailman as the woman who took on Harvard on behalf of the Trump administration. But Mailman, a Stephen Miller ally, is also the mastermind of Trump’s most sweeping anti-trans order—one that could have devastating repercussions for the rights of *all* women. motherjones.com/politics/2026/…

NEW: When Rep. Jennifer McClellan was sworn into office, she put her hand on her father’s Bible where he kept the receipt of a poll tax he paid in 1947 when registering to vote. The SAVE America Act would impose a modern-day poll tax, reversing decades of progress made by voting rights advocates. democracydocket.com/opinion/the-sa…

Yep, you read that right. Republicans want to cut health care subsidies for poor and working Americans to fund Trump's illegal war in Iran. Instead of making billionaires pay their fair share, or cutting rampant fraud and waste, they’re choosing to cut your health care, raise your monthly premiums, and make it harder to take your kids to the doctor. This is not a budget negotiation. This is a choice about whose lives matter – and I refuse to let them make that choice without a fight.

Two-year-old Kaleth is being locked away at the Dilley trailer prison. He is getting sicker with each passing day. He will not eat the food CoreCivc serves, which detainees have said sometimes has mold and worms. He now has a fever. When his mother asked for help, the staff said it was all “mental.” A vulnerable child at the Dilley trailer prison was suffering and ICE denied their reality and their needs. It’s shameful and must stop. I am calling for ICE to provide proper medical care to Kaleth and to release him and his mother Joani immediately.
