I just had a random thought.
When Micheal Jackson was working on Sonic 3, he apparently was frustrated with the limitations of the genesis soundchip, which was apparently one of the reasons he went uncredited.
They shoulda just let him hop in the studio for Sonic CD, because it was being worked on around the same time.
There woulda been no limits to hold him back with CD quality audio
