Sir Keir Starmer has set up a new cabinet committee to deal with the fallout for Iran - it's called the Middle East Response Committee The PM is chairing the first meeting of it today. Antonia Romeo, the cabinet secretary, will host regular meetings with officials Why does it matter? Because it underlines the government's central assumption that the Iran war will go long, both in terms of the conflict and the consequences The cost of living fallout - on petrol prices, holidays, energy bills, prices in shops - is already beginning. Experts suggest a cost-of-living crisis in the Autumn/ Winter is already 'baked in' because of the existing disruption caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz The new committee will 'bring together the international and domestic response' and is in addition to the regular COBR meetings

Rolls-Royce welcomes landmark contract with UK Government for delivery of Small Modular Reactors bit.ly/47QIY08

Rolls-Royce securing the UK’s Small Modular Reactor contract is one of the few genuinely strategic moves this country has made in years. We’re talking about homegrown nuclear capability, thousands of skilled jobs, and long term energy security, not just another short term fix. SMRs can be built faster and cheaper than traditional plants and crucially they’re scalable. The UK is finally backing its own industry instead of outsourcing everything abroad. Personally would like us to go much heavier on nuclear power but this is an important move, which will create around 8'000 jobs.
