Let me join the many patriots, compatriots and fellow South Africans in extending revolutionary birthday wishes to the 12th President of the ANC, the 4th duly elected and constitutionally sworn-in President of this Republic; and now President and leader of MKP, His Excellency, former President Prof. Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Mhlanganyelwa Zuma, on the occasion of his 84th birthday. Many years of good health, Comrade President. As a South African and patriot, I remain deeply grateful for your contribution to the attainment of our political freedom, and certainly your selfless commitment as a freedom fighter, your resilience as a political prisoner, and ultimately your service to this Republic and its people. Siyabonga Nxamalala on that front alone among others! 🎂 #HappyBirthdayPresidentZuma

I genuinely struggle to understand where this idea comes from that the Zuma twins, Duduzane and Duduzile, are somehow not South African simply because they were born in Mozambique when their parents were in exile. It feels like a complete disregard of both our history and the lived reality of many families during the years of exile. Their parents are South African, the father who is former President Jacob Zuma from Nkandla, and the mother Mme Kate Mantsho from Alex and Soweto, and that alone settles the matter. Birth location under those material conditions was never a matter of choice, but rather a consequence of political struggle. People forget that exile was not a holiday or a relocation of comfort, it was a forced condition shaped by apartheid. Many children of that exile generation were born and others raised outside the country because their parents were actively involved in the liberation struggle. That does not dilute their identity or belonging in any way. If anything, it deepens it. To suggest otherwise is to erase a very important chapter of our history and the sacrifices that came with it. Even in today’s South Africa, our laws are very clear. Being born outside the country to South African parents does not make one a foreigner. It simply means your birthplace is elsewhere, not your identity. In fact, many South Africans today have children abroad, and no one questions their nationality. Some even benefit from dual citizenship, but they remain South African at their core. So this idea that exile-born children are somehow “less South African” is not just misguided, it is equally intellectually shallow. It seriously shows a lack of understanding of both our historical and political past, and more so of our current constitutional framework. We need to move away from this kind of narrow thinking and ground ourselves in facts, history, and a basic sense of comprehension above political expediency.

A spiritual gift is not only a blessing. It is also a burden because to carry it you must be shaped by it. The gift will refine you, many times through discomfort, loss or isolation, not because it is punishing you but because it is preparing you to hold what you carry without distortion.
