I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I believe it is the one and only true church of Christ on earth. We don’t have to agree theologically. There is room in the world for many ideas. If you want to attack my choice or come after my friends and fellow saints online about it, I don’t have room for you in this space. In that regard, you are not welcome here. Who *is* welcome here is anyone else regardless of where/if you attend church on Sunday (or Saturday.) There is so much persecution and bigotry already about my church, I refuse to passively allow it on my little corner of the internet. If you are not a member there are things you may not be aware of about my church and its members. 1. We read the Bible. In fact, Pew Research and Rasmussen both say we read it more than ANY other religions. 2. Our youth study the scriptures intensively all throughout high school. Every day of high school, they attend seminary classes and study The Bible, the Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price (collectively known as “The Standard Works.” 3. While our temples are special and only those worthy and willing to keep the covenants we learn about inside may enter, our meeting houses joyfully welcome all visitors every Sunday and anyone in my area can come with me any Sunday. If you aren’t in my area, I have friends here from many parts of the world and the US who will extend the same invitation. 4. We are prayerful, service-minded folk. If you need prayers, we are Zions Army. 5. My testimony is firm. My parents disowned and disinherited me for being a member. One of my siblings nearly beat me because of religious differences, I’ve lost a job and friends because I refused to denounce my faith and affiliation or even to water it down. Your words are but empty vessels in that regard. 6. In 1844 Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs issued Executive Order 44 which authorized and ordered the extermination of all members of my church. Among Christian religions, we are still today the most persecuted in the United States. Hateful rhetoric is still present at sporting events, on social media, and every online platform. You can find so much misinformation about my beliefs. Just as the Governor of Missouri and President Taft, and the people of Hancock country chose not only to understand these beliefs but perpetuated falsehoods and encouraged violence, today’s attitudes are not much different. I don’t agree with many people theologically, but I don’t use disparaging language and dangerous rhetoric to address the differences. Insulting people and tearing them down is not usually an effective means to change. 7. I’m not in a cult. I could leave any time I felt so inclined. I’m not.
