The U.S. has many more options than to only seize Kharg Island with ground forces. It may be possible to isolate, degrade, or rendered it inoperable without occupation. Kharg is uniquely a center of gravity for the regime’s economic power/survival. It handles roughly 90% of Iran’s oil exports, the primary source of state revenue, it is the regime’s most reliable source of hard currency to fund its military, IRGC, and internal security apparatus. It also absolutely matters to the economy. Under the regime, Iran’s economy has been hollowed out. Currency collapse, banking instability, and chronic mismanagement have made oil revenue/Kharg Island even more critical. That matters. It is about the regime’s ability to sustain war, project power, and maintain internal control. It is about economics, power, will. And it is only one of many options at play. War is act of force (or importantly a threat of the use of force) to compel our enemy to do our will.
