The founders were wary of war powers being concentrated in the hands of the few. Speaking of the Executive branch, John Adams warned that it was “most interested in war, and most prone to it.” The solution was to invest Congress with the power to initiate war (Article I, Section 8), and the President with the power to carry it out. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 was a legal compromise that allowed the President to initiate conflict, but basically imposed limits upon the duration of these conflicts (60 days + 30 days to withdrawal) unless approval was granted by Congress. So, Yes, Trump is presently operating within the law unless Congress decides to change it. However, this would also need a veto-proof majority to do so, an almost impossible task unless this conflict turns into a complete nightmare and brings about massive public outrage (Similar to the Epstein conundrum). Americans overwhelmingly wanted to avoid this war (contrary to some polls that showed heavy influence by pro-Israeli foreign X accounts) but I choose to believe that our Chief Executive is acting upon an actual threat to our country until proven otherwise. I sincerely hope and pray that this conflict does not reveal itself as anything else. Constitutionally speaking, this is also the more appropriate response from a US Senator representing the State of Oklahoma, a position I will nobly assume once you have vacated the office. #meinhardt2026
