A long interview by Sky with Alexander Zverev (I shared an excerpt already yesterday) about support from his colleagues, the final, pressure, and a humorous look ahead to the grass-court season Q.: Sascha, first of all, congratulations. It’s such an incredible story. But you’re not really the type who believes in fate, but rather says: it’s actually hard work? Zverev: "I believe that we really earned this victory. We did almost everything, or a lot of things, to achieve this success. Sure, there’s been a bit of criticism. Well, not criticism, but there have been comments from many people saying, ‘Okay, Sinner lost, Alcaraz didn’t even play.’ But how much bad luck have I had at Grand Slams in recent years? I think it’s okay to have a bit of luck once in a career, and I’m more than happy to accept that luck." Q: You're familiar with all these statistics. You know that Djokovic and Nadal have also had Slams where they didn't have to beat a top-10 player. Everything I've heard in the scene - I just got back from Stuttgart - I spoke with Nick Kyrgios and Ben Shelton yesterday. They all say the same thing Flavio Cobolli said: there's no player who deserves it more than you. How much does it mean to you that, no matter which player you ask, they all say: he had to win a Grand Slam? Zverev: "I think I’ve simply done enough over the past 10 or 15 years to win it. Of course, you can never be 100% sure you’ll win one. Especially since we have so many incredible players—Novak, Rafa and Roger back then, and now Alcaraz and Sinner. There’s never a guarantee you’ll win one. But of course, I’m happy about it. I’m happy that I was finally able to win this title. And yes, I’ve received a lot of messages from other players, from my colleagues, and I think what means the most to me is that they’re happy for me. That’s something special to me." Q: There were also so many funny videos. I saw Russell Crowe, the Gladiator, rooting for you. Thomas Müller, you've definitely seen the video too, where he's going wild. Zverev: "Thomas Müller is the best. I laughed my head off. I love that guy. He's amazing." Q: And when you look back into the tennis bubble, a lot of experts say: 'Okay, now he's won the Slam, now he's automatically a Hall of Famer with this career.' So you've basically reached the pinnacle of tennis. Do you agree? Zverev: "I don't know. I'd be happy if that happened, but my career isn't over yet. I want to play for another 10 years, hopefully, and then we can talk about it. I'm not thinking about that right now. I want to keep playing tennis, I want to keep playing and winning big tournaments. And I hope this won't be my last." Q.: I think you’ve always managed it in such a really structured way, this whole pressure situation. From the moment Sinner went out, the same questions kept coming up over and over again. Is the success formula that simple for you? Eating sushi, hanging out with your friends...? Zverev: "No, I faked it to the absolute limit. I convinced myself of it. So, yes, now I can be honest about it. I convinced myself, I lied to myself, for my own good purpose. When Sinner lost, I didn’t sleep at all that night. Luckily, the next day I played in the evening against Quentin Halys, so I was able to sleep the whole day. But what happens during the day? The match before me -Djokovic loses. So, the worst match I played at the French Open was definitely the one against Quentin Halys. I mean, I was tight, I wasn’t free, I didn’t play well, I didn’t serve well. That was the only match where I really didn’t serve well. And after I won that match, then I was like, okay, phew, I’ve gotten through that match now, now I can get back to myself, now I can play tennis again. But, of course, I was nervous. It was, I think, the most stressful week I’ve ever had in my life, to be honest. I knew that suddenly I was the overwhelming favorite at this tournament, which I'd never been at a Grand Slam before. I knew that if I could play good tennis, which I’ve also shown all year, and just play my usual tennis, that I can really win this tournament and have to win it. And I think I managed that incredibly well - up until the final. In the final, I was very nervous, I was tense. But even there, in the crucial moments, I played my best tennis, and yes, I think I played the best set of the match in the fifth set." Q: The cramps in the final. You're one of the fittest players. That's 100% mental? Zverev: "Yes, I wasn't tired at all. I could have played another five sets. Suddenly I got cramps, and the cramps had nothing to do with the physical aspect, because if it had been physical cramps, I would have been tired by the end. But I kept running with the cramps (laughs). So nothing changed. I was just standing there, and when I was waiting for the serve, I started getting cramps. As I said, it was the mental tension. I was incredibly nervous, incredibly tense, which is also human. I'm in a Grand Slam final as the overwhelming favorite, and I'd never won a Grand Slam before. If I were in that situation again now, I think I would be more relaxed, I could enjoy it more. But the stress level was incredibly high for me." Q.: There’s an American saying: 'He got the monkey off his back.' Marcelo told me yesterday: “We have a Brazilian saying: ‘When one cow goes through the gate, several more are sure to follow,’ and he says that’s a real weight off his mind - the best Sascha is yet to come.” Zverev: “Yeah, I hope so. I hope so, sure.” Q.: Is that how it feels to you? Zverev: "I don't know. I'll have to play another tournament first. I mean, I'll have to get to another tournament and then tell you how it feels. We’re sitting here on Wednesday, and the whole thing happened 2 ½ days ago. I feel like I haven’t slept for two nights because I was out celebrating. I can still be that honest. And then I had appointments nonstop. So first I need to calm down, I need to start training tennis again, and then we’ll see. But for me, I do think that’s how it’ll be in my head, because even if I’m playing a Grand Slam final against Sinner or Alcaraz and things aren’t going my way, I know I’ve already won one. And no one can take that away from me anymore." Q: Let's talk about the grass-court season. Zverev: "We can skip that (laughs)." Q: But you played so aggressively. Sure, grass, the results say it's your toughest surface, but everyone also said, "Actually, you've got everything to..." Zverev: "That's a fallacy, because grass tennis has nothing to do with that aggressive style of play. Sure, you have to play aggressively, but that's not the deciding factor in whether you play well on grass or not. The deciding factor in whether you play well on grass or not is whether you can move on the surface. That's the be-all and end-all. And for me, at 2 meters tall and 95 kg, it's difficult. I played incredibly well on grass in 2024. I said back then that I felt better than ever. What happens? I slip and break a bone in my knee. Those are the kinds of things that can only happen on grass. Because I can play tennis on fast surfaces. I won Paris Bercy two years ago. That was the fastest hard court in the last 10 years. I won Cincinnati, that was one of the fastest hard courts in the world. I won the Olympics, there it was incredibly fast. The speed of the surface suits me. The movement is the problem. That's my only problem, and I have to learn it." Q.: But if you look at the draw now, Sinner is seeded No. 1, you're No. 2... Zverev: "I don’t care about that. I’ve never been to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. First I have to beat Arthur Rinderknech. I can guarantee you that - I’m not lying to myself here - I’m really taking it one match at a time there (laughs)." Q: You just mentioned the Olympics again. Was your comment about the Olympics being harder to win also a bit of a tactical one, but do you think, in terms of its significance for your career, that this Grand Slam title could even surpass Olympic gold in importance? Zverev: "No, not for me, because the Olympics is the hardest title to win. Once every four years. We have so few Olympic champions; we have so many great names who have never won the Olympics. You don’t just win the Olympics for yourself - the whole country is rooting for you. You have an entire village behind you. The Olympics is simply on another level that much more special." Q.: Your story is incredibly powerful - I wish you continued success. It’s truly impressive how you managed it. It’s great that you lied to yourself and all of us (laughs). Zverev: "I had to do it. What else am I supposed to do? If I sit in press conferences and say, ‘I’m nervous, I’m shitting my pants,’ that doesn’t help me, it doesn’t help anyone - it might help my opponents. But if I tell myself that a thousand times, it’s a psychological fact - then you start to believe it. I believed it starting from the quarterfinals and semifinals, too."
