Nearly 2,000 ships trapped in the Persian Gulf. LNG facilities damaged. Qatar's export capacity down 17% with five years of repairs ahead. Production sites shuttered across the Gulf. A backlog that will take months to clear even after the mines come out of the water.
Researcher at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, Anne-Sophie Corbeau:
"It's not like you switch the light button and everything comes back online."
Oil was at $73 before the war. It won't see $73 again for the rest of the year even if peace breaks out today.
Corbeau says months. The founder of Africa's largest oil refinery says 6 months minimum, then $75-80 for the rest of 2026.
The war has an end date. The damage has a very different one.
