I’ve written this before but we’re already in the early stages of a massive Anglo university bust(US/UK/Canada/Australia). It’ll intensify in the 2030s but thousands of colleges are going to go out of business. Terrible student demographics, far less Chinese students wanting to study abroad, not enough wealthy students from the rest of the world to replace said Chinese, and AI just completely destroying most entry level knowledge work and eventually up the ladder as well. Only truly elite universities and public universities will survive IMO. Mid tier schools like syracuse, a lot of the small private liberal arts schools, and anything that’s private and low tier are absolutely finished. Universities will go back towards being an elite privilege. The golden age of the university was fun while it lasted.
BuccoCapital Bloke@buccocapital

Syracuse announced a financial deficit this week after missing their enrollment target. They cite demographics + geopolitics, but the answer is much simpler: There are 5.7k higher ed institutions in the US, charging way too much for something that is worth less than ever

I’ve come to the uneasy conclusion that elements of the left have come to crave capitalism’s outcomes shorn of the Protestant work ethic. A child’s dream of endless abundance without work or the need to listen to parental authority. Yet once work is sidelined, whence the worker?

@filmstofilms_ I would have added Jean Cocteau, Lars von Trier, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Akira Kurosawa, Francois Truffaut, Ken Russell, Ang Lee, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Woody Allen, Terry Gilliam, David Lean, Roman Polanski, and so many other names as well. That list is very reductive.

@pplsartofwar good description of the search for servility by these companies I also noticed how obsessed they are with process, because they think that the same work can be done by an average worker is the process in standardized

Execs recoil from those who produce and innovate. That implies a standards. Standards invites questions about their relevance. So they import staff from cultures where flattery is valued more than productivity. And corruption and grift is tolerated. Its a silent transaction. The incompetent leadership feel important and valued. While thinking they're saying money. The imported workers acquires a patron who tolerates their dysfunction. And a higher social class than they'd achieve at home. So rhe unproductive find a home, and the incompetent find a shield.

The H-1B debate keeps asking the wrong question. Its more than about saving money. There's a larger cultural rot why it happens. So broken institutions don't reform itself. Ive found it protects itself, then finds people who fit the rot. Then it writes a press release about inclusion. A corrupt system hires the most compatible. When you understand that, the foreign hiring becomes very clear very fast.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Brasil@PortalJeffreyBR

We have seen many comments recently about Jeffrey Dean Morgan's appearance. Unfortunately, some people still feel entitled to speculate and make assumptions about someone's body and health without knowing anything about their personal reality. When a person gains weight, they are criticized. When they lose weight, rumors immediately start about illness, drug use, or other personal issues. If they age, they are judged for it. If their appearance changes, it becomes a topic of discussion. The truth is that, for some people, nothing ever seems to be "right." This kind of behavior is not only unnecessary, but also deeply disrespectful. None of us knows what someone may be going through in their personal life, what choices they have made, what their routine is like, or what challenges they may be facing. Making assumptions about a person's health or well-being based on a few photos or public appearances is not concern. It is a lack of empathy. Jeffrey is a human being before he is a public figure. Like anyone else, he deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We can admire his work, celebrate his career, and share moments from his journey without turning his appearance into a subject of speculation. Before commenting on someone's body, ask yourself: Is this kind? Is it necessary? Does it contribute anything positive? Let’s choose empathy over judgment, and respect over rumors. Every person deserves that, regardless of whether they are famous or not. ❤️ We are leaving some comments here that we believe best represent the kind of messages we have been receiving and are already tired of deleting on a daily basis. Our goal has always been to keep this space positive, respectful, and focused on celebrating Jeffrey's work and career. However, constantly dealing with offensive, invasive, and speculative comments has become exhausting. Honestly, we may soon have to limit comments to followers only. No community should have to tolerate this kind of behavior in order to remain a healthy and welcoming space. And, to be honest, we believe that if Jeffrey were more active on social media, he would probably make the same decision. Respect should be the bare minimum in any space, whether public or private.

For the bank robbery shootout in Heat, Michael Mann spent months putting the actors through intensive tactical firearms training. But what makes the scene great is its psychological realism, each character acts in way that tells us something about who they are. Mann explains… “In my planning, I wanted to move from the dramatic to actuality. The second (Val Kilmer) he sees them, no hesitation. Bam. He opens up. The planning and everything else came from: what are situations in which everything suddenly starts to go wrong? The LAPD assets — as the clock ticks, more and more of them are going to come in. The point is to get out, and get out fast, and do it with real aggression. The police are used to overwhelming power and overwhelming force. They’re not used to being assaulted by people who know what they’re doing. And they don’t do that well when they are. If drama is conflict, that’s the basic conflict - it’s all character and it’s all story. (Tom) Sizemore’s route that he takes is like Sizemore. He picks up a child. Why does he pick up a child? That’s because he’s a sociopath. He would do anything for his kids, but he doesn’t care about your kids at all. They’re zeros. McCauley (De Niro) fires randomly because he knows Pacino will try to keep people down. It’s all driven by character and attitude. And the choreography of the scene, and where they were in the landscape, was plotted out months before we shot it. It was down to every single detail. And then all of the weapons training that the guys did was under very, very strict supervision by the range masters — L.A. County Sheriff’s range masters. I was able to build every single car and station on that shootout — this lamppost, this mailbox — with full live ammo. So in the actors’ minds, not only did they become incredibly skilled, but it was real. They used some of the film of Val Kilmer firing forward, turning, firing back, and then doing a reload. They used that in Fort Bragg. They said - “95% of you will not be able to fire as well as this actor.”

Nicholas Pileggi, author of Casino, struggled to write the book because none of the mobsters involved were willing to talk to him. But that all changed when word got out that Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro were interested in adapting it into a film. Pileggi explains… “I was working on the book, and a lot of these people were not cooperative — including the Ace Rothstein character, the real Ace Rothstein (Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal). He wasn’t cooperative - he’s a brilliant man, but what did he need with a book? He was very wealthy, very smart, and he didn’t need his ego played around with in such a way. But then word got out that Marty and I were going to be doing a Casino movie next, and Marty had mentioned Bob (De Niro) would play one of the parts. Somehow that got into Variety or some newspaper, because this guy is in Florida and I get a call from him. And he said, “Are you guys turning this into a movie?” I said, “Well, if we can get a book, we get a story.” And he said, “I hear that Robert De Niro is going to play a part in it?” I said, “Yeah, that looks like it.” “Robert De Niro,” he said, “is the greatest actor of his generation.” I said, “Well, I’m not going to argue with you.” And then he said, “Could I meet Robert De Niro?” I said, “Of course you can,” because at least this was an opening. And so I told Marty, who talked to Bob De Niro, and he got on a plane and went right down to see this guy, Ace, in Florida. And they really hit it off. And when the movie was announced, suddenly it became easier to get information for the book. People who had slammed doors in my face, hung up, had their lawyers threaten me — all of a sudden, they’re calling me up to meet Bob De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, or Marty Scorsese. So, you know, I’m the writer. I’m there. And all of a sudden, it all opened up.” Quote comes from the bonus features on the Casino DVD

@CarloDallapicc1 @kmstx78 Yes they are talented but come on, better than Tarkovsky ? Plus with all due respect to Agnès Varda, how can she be considered better than Jean-Pierre Melville ? That list breathes the absolute necessity to have a womzn, but in French cinema, Melville Carné or Clouzot were better

@CoraBuhlert @CatStaggs It's too expensive for the money it's going to make. If it cost $200 mil, double that to include the promo campaign, so the movie will have to make at least $600-800 mil to be considered profitable.

Global Box Office@GlobalBoxOffice

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE dropped -71% domestically on its second weekend. With a budget of nearly $200M, it is now tracking to become one of biggest box office bombs of all time.
