I don't think people fully grasp how significant the current "deal" situation with Iran really is. Back in 2015, after the Obama administration negotiated the JCPOA, Congress passed the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA) with near-unanimous support. The principle was simple: ANY major agreement involving Iran's nuclear program and/or sanctions relief was far too important to be handled solely by the executive branch. Because many of the sanctions at issue were originally enacted by Congress as a national security measure, lawmakers required that any such agreement be submitted to Congress within 5 days & subjected to a review period. 🧵(1/3)

Trump: "I want to mention Iran. We appreciate the relationship we've had over a short period of time with Iran. We're not investing any money. I have the right to if we want, but we're not investing any money. We didn't pay for it like Obama did. He paid billions of dollars."

The question inside Trump's White House wasn't whether suspending habeas corpus was a good idea. It was how much the administration could get away with before the courts stopped them. That's a warning worth paying attention to. Read here: joycevance.substack.com/p/the-question…

Americans realizing they spent $75 billion fighting Iran, then another $300 billion rebuilding Iran, just to reopen the Strait of Hormuz that was already open before the war started

5/They said "one of the really cool things and interesting things about this entire process is that we actually have a direct relationship with a number of people at the highest levels of the Iranian government. That really hasn't happened in 47 years of our relationship with Iran." This is not a huge thing, but it suggests they haven't really done their research on US-Iran relations. (See: JCPOA talks.)

1/I listened to the senior Trump administration officials' call about the latest with Iran. I am in some ways more confused now than before the call. A few thoughts:

The Hormuz Letter
The Hormuz Letter@HormuzLetter·
BREAKING: Iran says the US has agreed to permanently hand over the Strait of Hormuz to Iran under their full sovereign authority, with Iran collecting tolls called "service fees" from all commercial ships after a 60-day waiver period. The opening is planned for Friday, after the signing, per Fars. With pre-war Hormuz traffic at 30,000 vessels and 7.6 billion barrels of oil per year, this could generate $10+ billion in annual revenue for Iran, and comes on top of the $300 billion in reconstruction funds directly sent to Iran. This also directly contradicts Trump's claim of a "toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz" under no fees.

Trump: We had two big moments—when I terminated the JCPOA, the Obama deal. It was a horrible deal for the United States. It was a deal where billions of dollars was given to Iran. They tried to bribe them to make a deal. That never works.

2026 is the first year in 18 years in which there are zero female active duty four-star generals. Pete Hegseth has been intervening in military promotions & fighting the military’s leaders in firing & denying promotions to women. The military promotions board – including its Trump-appointed director – selected 31 officers for promotion as “the best qualified officers within their respective competitive category.” Those 31 included seven women. Nine total promotions were cancelled by Hegseth: all seven women & two black men. Not one white man was removed.

I want to highlight for psychiatric clinicians some lines from Trump’s failed emergency motion to the DC Circuit seeking to keep his name on the Kennedy Center. “The name ‘Kennedy’ is still on the Building, but in a much stronger form,” Trump writes. (That is, below his.) 1/5
