@Merrydawg I do recommend the story 1000000% and I think it's a pity to skip it, because it pays off massively throughout the journey, but sometimes people have other priorities or wants out of a game that offers a lot like this one. They can go back to the story later if they choose to.

@Merrydawg There's a vocal group of people saying that if you skip the story, don't play because the game is the story and go play a game like WoW if all you want is to raid. As someone who LOVES this game's story, but also raids and all other content, I think it's a very bad take.

On the FFXIV story skip debate: It feels like people are speaking past each other. I don't think the majority of players are saying that people shouldn't be ALLOWED to skip the story. I think people just want to prevent new players being told that they should just skip the story, because it's "boring." A Realm Reborn is often touted as this horribly slow story, but I'd say it's actually pretty good. Even Asmongold, a massively endgame focused WoW player, enjoyed A Realm Reborn way more than he thought he would. If you truly want to just skip all of it, and don't care, that's fine. Nobody is saying you shouldn't be allowed to. But I do think new players should be encouraged to play through the story, and not simply told to skip it. I know it's a meme nowadays, but the average attention span in 2026 is critically low. Tiktok and video games have let people grow accustomed to getting instant gratification, to the point where many things are designed specifically to capture people as early as humanly possible with shiny numbers and instant rewards. Encouraging people to enjoy a slower paced work of art with a slow burn story, I would say, is actually very healthy. Tl;dr You should be allowed to skip the story if you want, but I don't think you should. And I don't think you should encourage others to.
