"He wants to be the greatest player that's ever played the game, and he's putting in the work to get there. He's a completely different animal than anything that we've ever seen."
Spurs legend @seanelliott_32 breaks down the 1-of-1 talent of Victor Wembanyama on The Jim Rome Podcast: megaphone.link/WWO2130857127

My son came home from karate with a white belt.
I asked what it meant. He said: "You know nothing. You have an opportunity to learn everything."
That stopped me cold. I was an MLB manager at the time.
Most leaders confuse experience with wisdom.
They've "seen it all" so they stop listening, stop asking, stop being curious.
But the leaders who last longest never stop being students. They have the White Belt Mentality.
Here are 3 principles of the White Belt Mentality.
Principle 1: Approach every room like you have something to learn.
The moment you walk in thinking you already have the answers, you've lost.
• Ask more questions than you give answers
• Seek out people who challenge your thinking
• Be the first to say "I don't know but let's figure it out together"
The leaders who stay curious outlast the ones who think they've arrived.
Principle 2: Your team will teach you.
When I was managing the Pirates, my best ideas didn't come from strategy sessions.
They came from conversations with players, coaches, and support staff who were closest to the problem.
I had to listen, not just wait to talk. Actually listen.
People tell you exactly what they need, if you're willing to hear it.
Principle 3: Build habits that force you to keep growing.
Staying a white belt isn't an attitude, it's a daily practice.
• Carry a journal and write down what you learn, not just what you do
• Spend a few months learning from one voice, book, or mentor, and then follow the seeds to the next
• Seek out people who tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear
The best leaders in any room aren't the ones with the most experience.
They're the ones still acting like they have the most to learn.

The First Spurs Playoff Game in San Antonio.
Before the banners…
Before the parades…
Before the championships…
There was a bus ride.
April 3, 1974.
My friend Steve “The Original Rock” DiRocco was 14.
I was 13.
Too young to drive… but not too young to believe.
So we caught a bus from the Medical Center to downtown San Antonio.
Two kids chasing something we didn’t fully understand yet… but felt in our bones.
Hope.
Belonging.
Magic.
Inside Hemisfair Arena, the Spurs were still new to the city… still finding their place… just like we were.
But that night?
Everything felt possible.
The Spurs took the floor against the favored Indiana Pacers… and something electric filled the air.
Pat Tallman on the P.A. microphone.
Terry Stembridge on the radio call (there was no TV that night).
Dancing Harry grooving above the visitor's locker room with his Lone Star beer and moving to "Cotton Eye Joe."
Swen Nater dominated with 27 points and 15 rebounds.
A young George Gervin glided across the court with 23 points and 11 boards, already hinting at greatness.
And superstar George McGinnis brought the fight for Indiana.
But this was San Antonio’s night.
115–96.
A statement.
A spark.
A beginning.
The Spurs took a 2–1 lead… and two early teenage boys in the stands felt like they were part of something bigger than themselves.
We were in Heaven.
All was right with the world.
We didn’t know then that the ABA title would never come…
That it would take 25 more years to win it all.
That patience would be part of the journey.
We only knew this:
We were there.
At the beginning.
And sometimes, that’s the most sacred place to be.
Tonight, as the Spurs tip off their 404th playoff game in franchise history.
I’ll think about that bus ride.
That arena.
That night.
And being there with Steve.
And I’ll smile.
Because long before the championships…
There were two kids, a dream,
and the first spark of belief. 🖤🏀

The day before the draft in 2023 was the first day I met Victor Wembanyama. He told us then why he embraced dealing with the media, unlike the Spurs greats before him. Today he won the Magic Johnson award which goes to the NBA player who best exemplifies grace and cooperation in dealing with the media and fans.

@NBA_NewYork Spot on Mike….. so disappointing that local TV broadcasters are knocked out of the playoffs entirely. We want Jacob Sean and the crew. Thank goodness at least we still can hear Danalytics Weiss on Spurs radio in the postseason!

I’ll remember tonight forever 🫶
Honored to have sung the National Anthem at the @spurs game on Native American Heritage Night, honoring Lindy Waters, my tribe, and the native people of San Antonio 🪶
Can’t thank @seanelliott_32 enough for the unreal intro 😂
