@ValMWalton @WillieFordhamm We understand that. Our point is that within our profession we should still respect those who have earned social work degrees. If someone is a macro social worker working as a policy analyst at a state legislature I doubt they’ll be fined if they refer to themselves as such.

@ValMWalton @WillieFordhamm Yes some states are like this, however, that is the problem. Someone with a BSW and/or MSW is still a social worker, just can’t be recognized legally as one without a license in certain states. An MD without a license is still a doctor. This is why our profession is undervalued.

@WillieFordhamm @BlackMenInSW In Alabama, there is title protection. If you don’t have a license, you are not considered a social worker. You can have a social work degree, but you are not a social worker until licensed. It’s similar to having a law degree -until you pass the bar, you are no lawyer.

The bill will fund the degree program at UDC for D.C. residents. It’ll also cover the cost of books and student licensing exams, as well as provide students with a monthly stipend for living expenses and transportation. dcist.com/story/23/11/08…

We all have. This doesn’t negate that they are social work adjacent but not social workers.

@BlackMenInSW In almost 30 yrs in SW, I've worked w/many "SW's" with related degrees but with lived experience that are more effective and practice closer to NASW standards than some MSW's with little to no lived experience, cultural humility, ability to work with black and brown communities.

If you get hired as a nurse with no nursing degree does that make you a nurse?
If you give your friend a Tylenol and take their vitals does that make you a nurse?
If you have no social work degree you are not a social worker.

@BlackMenInSW I understand that perspective which is clearly accurate to some, at least philosophically, although not always technically correct (if your job title in a gov position is "Social Worker", by definition you are technically a Social Worker.)

@socialwrkmentor We understand that reality. Which is why the post was clear. Having a job titled “Social Worker” without a social work degree doesn’t make you a social worker. Having a criminal justice degree and working as a social worker means that person isn’t a social worker lol

@BlackMenInSW Not sure if you're talking about licensure (seems like maybe you're not necesarily talking about that specifically), but if so, depends what state you're in. In California (and prob others) you can have a degree in a related field and get a government job as a "Social Worker"
