@guerns85299 @IranArmystan_ The west acts like terrorists, bombing schools, hospitals, desalinization plants in Iran, demolishing entire villages in Lebanon, and u lack the humanity to see past AmerIsraeli propaganda. If they told you shit was ice cream you'd eat it and say thank you.

@veryworrisome @soundsbycoop Parking your car in any place is a luxury. If you get to do it for 'free' there is a cost incurred by society elsewhere that is paid for differently. Your parking in that case is subsidized. Even when you go to Walmart your parking is subsidized by Walmart and the city.

@veryworrisome @soundsbycoop Yes, luxuries deserve to be taxed and basic human rights should be free, that is the goal we should work towards. One can determine what should be a human right based on the expense and necesity. Car infrastructure and vehicles are v expnsv for societyso shld be taxed accordingly

"exaggerating the dark side of society"
@BreadsPosts @soundsbycoop Your logic is apparently that if something is a luxury then it deserves to be taxed, fined, charged, etc., which is not convincing. Are green spaces/public parks a luxury? Libraries? Boat launches? Then you assert that cars *presently* are a necessity.

@veryworrisome @soundsbycoop If you're not going to engage with my points I'm done with this convo. The point I'm making is they're necessary by design in the US and among others because of oil lobby. But if we shift from car centric to human centric what is a necessary luxury becomes just a luxury.

@veryworrisome @soundsbycoop I have to drive to work. I know they are a necessity. But that is entirely because we built a shit world full of highways and roads and pollution where everything is miles apart with no alternatives. That's a massive fucking problem we need to get passed. Cars are still luxuries.

"exaggerating the dark side of society"
@BreadsPosts @soundsbycoop For you cars may be a luxury, for many they are a tool of necessity. Also, nowhere do you mention the requirement of money to store these purported "large luxury item" in public space. What else would a dedicated public parking lot by a beach be used for if not to store cars?

AI and LLMs are part of that mass surveillance and speech control campaign tho. The main thing people are taking issue with is your inability to present these 'wildly popular tech products' as a part of the surveillance apparatus u claim to oppose.
Taylor Lorenz@TaylorLorenz

At a time when the govt is attempting to enact mass surveillance and censorship by regulating online SPEECH like cigarettes and drugs, you guys cannot stop comparing wildly popular consumer tech products to drugs. Begging anyone on the left to wake up x.com/Atencio/status…

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
Tucson made a simple change to 20,000 streetlights. Light pollution dropped 7%, energy bills dropped $2.16 million a year, and many songbirds were saved. Most LEDs have made light pollution worse. The cool-white lights most cities chose scatter into the sky at higher rates than the old sodium lamps. That scatter pulls migrating songbirds off course and drops them into lit buildings by the hundreds of millions each year. Tucson decided to do it differently. They used warm-white 3,000K LEDs instead of the standard 4,000K. They added full shielding so light points down, not sideways or up, and adaptive dimming. Lights run at 90% from sunset to midnight, then drop to 60% until dawn. Drivers and pedestrians reported no loss of visibility. Migrating birds passing over the city had a darker corridor to navigate than they'd had in decades. Most cities still haven't figured this out. Philadelphia, LA, and Phoenix have all run into problems with retrofits that increased sky glow despite using LEDs. The tech is solved. The implementation is a choice. Ask your city council what color temperature your streetlights are. Ask if they dim after midnight. Ask if they're shielded. Most people have never thought about it. Most elected officials haven't either. Never forget that the night sky is also habitat.

There were like 2 or 3 in the US at the beginning of the war too. The part that I can't wrap my head around is who this would potentially serve. My gut says it's Israel, but I don't know why they'd put their energy towards worldwide shortages.

@veryworrisome @soundsbycoop Cars don't have a right to exist on public land or elsewhere. They're inherently a luxury and storage of large luxury items in public space isn't a right it is a privilege.

@BreadsPosts @soundsbycoop If you want to penalize people to satisfy some latent sadism, go right ahead. Nothing is preventing enforcement citations for overuse of scarcity. But the overall use of public land does not justify a shoehorned profiteering mindset by administration.

@guerns85299 @IranArmystan_ U can tell urself that to make urself feel better. @TaylorLorenz @Philgebunts @MGBFBWL @jwordfish @andevers Cool, so everything is shit then? Is that it? Or is AI the greatest thing ever? Pick one. Your argument is basically Google sucks now because AI so AI use for research is actually good. But no. They both suck, one actively lies the other requires more knowledge of the web to use.

LLMs collate search (Google, Reddit, StackOverflow etc) in a way that users find agreeable but gives them lower-quality info, obscures/misquotes sources constantly, and kills web traffic. ChatGPT’s product is a formerly functional feedback loop snapped to die like a glow necklace
Taylor Lorenz@TaylorLorenz

Ppl who believe that AI has no consumer use, how do u square that with skyrocketing use of AI and ChatGPT being the fastest growing consumer technology of all time? ChatGPT alone has 6.7M reviews and a 4.8 rating in the app store. People love these tools, how do u explain that?
