I know everyone is complaining about the wellington CBD. But out here in Island Bay we seem to have doubled the number of cafes and been steadily improving if anything. (Also people are staying home enough that it's now worth asking if people live nearby and just meeting here)

Mum was buying a new mobile phone today, and it really shits me that the people who work in those big box retailers prey on boomers by trying to convince them they need to pay for fucking Norton.

@David_Cormack Pretty much everything by Ingmar Bergman. I finished watching my way through the IMDB top 250 during covid and came to hate him more and more each time one of his films came up on the list.

If a guilty pleasure is a film or artist that you really like, but think is a bit shit; do you have 'innocent shames'? Films or music you hate, that everyone seems to love? Mine is Amelie. Fuck whimsy.

@traskjd Every society should focus on improving education, healthcare, food, and economic opportunity. Focus on improving those in parallel. Most interventions have diminishing returns.

@Breccan Agreed. Similarly some that lean heavily into the branding have some real.. how should I say this? “Bored Ape Yacht Club vibes”.

Who are the e/acc accounts in New Zealand on here? Bonus points if aligned to the movement but cringe at the label.

The most kiwi thing in the world - almost certainly secure a spot in the semi-finals and the article everyone wants to read is the thing you did wrong.

Now that we’re looking at a change of government to the Right in NZ, should we also increase term limits to 4 years?

@traskjd To me all the best open-source projects meet the following criteria: solves a problem where choices about whether something is better are relatively objective(i.e. databases) and the community that uses the tool is orders of magnitudes bigger than the minimum needed fund it.

Seems open source is one of two scenarios: 1. Anti capitalist. Want payment but don’t charge/can’t bring self to put a price on the code. Struggle to see how to make it sustainable, as any donation-based business does. Usually where “oh wow, thing that scratched my itch got popular” catches out a software developer. Feel for these folks at times, but if you want to make money please start a business. 2. Super capitalist. Bait & switch a model on a “community” that builds up the offering, lock it down once community has got it to product/market fit. Tell tail sign is usually VC funding for OSS. Likely over simplifying the framing here, just a take on how it seems to be split. What do you think? 🤔 P.S. good on you @PulumiCorp!
Pulumi@PulumiCorp

Pulumi stands with the open source community. We are unaffected by HashiCorp relicensing their software in an actively hostile way to their own community, users, and customers. Pulumi is true open source, does not depend in any way on BSL-licensed software, and never will 💜

The start of a new era! Data for the NZSL Online Dictionary is now stored in NZSL Signbank. The original Signbank tool, developed for Auslan, now has many spinoffs - see github.com/Signbank . The NZSL Signbank was adapted for us by @ackama - thank you!

@traskjd Consolidated brands are easier to manage and the early days of tech were won by getting product to market as fast as possible with a label that engendered some level of trust. Nowadays in markets with a lot more competent competitors you need enough brands to match your segments.

Lying in bed last night pondering. Earlier in the software industry, we had multi-product companies (MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, etc) that all had products under their main brand. Today, seems they're favoring the conglomerate model (GitHub, LinkedIn, etc - not branded as Microsoft).

I want a play by play of what @RobertIger does over the next 4 weeks far more than I want all these twitter discussions. There's so much nuance tied up in making Disney work.

I remain convinced that the cost of adding team members, in knowledge worker roles, is much higher than just an exponential overhead factor. Long held this philosophy in many areas (code, business). Efficiency is sexy and empowering.

@juhasaarinen @JoshForde It's a plant(native to NZ and AU funnily enough). We were really looking for something that we could tie the digital ecosystem idea to that was a relatively open space for us to play brand wise(in comparison to Rabid bringing way too much flavour to the brand).
