David Lammy is pushing plans to curb our ancient right to trial by jury — the biggest assault on English liberty, particularly free speech, in over 800 years. The Justice Secretary claims this radical move is the only way to tackle the 80,000-case Crown Court backlog. He is wrong. The Institute for Government shows Lammy’s reforms would save just 2% of Crown Court time — not the 20% he claims. On average, more than 64 Crown courtrooms sit empty on working days. That is the real cause of delay and denial of justice — not jury trials. Lawyer after lawyer has warned that if the Government presses ahead with this sinister, authoritarian plan, it will undermine public trust in the criminal justice system.
