Calling the cops is basically just calling a badged and licensed secretary at this point. Someone breaks into your house while youre gone? Call the secretary to come take an inventory of stuff you lost. Someone breaks in while youre there? Call the secretary to tell them how cool you are and pick up the body.
Id make the argument that calling the cops has not once improved someones situation vs just using a gun and handling it yourself. Yes that includes domestic violence. Youre not calling someone because you want a professional clerk, youre calling them because you want someone with a gun to come and fix situations that require a gun. So its easier to just have the gun already.
