This means there is a central focus on recognising each young person as an individual and nurturing critical thought using a framework of equity literacy and democratic education. The old approaches do not work. It’s time for a new approach. Join us!

Our long-term aim is that young people and teachers are more engaged in learning. We want schools to step away from a punitive zero tolerance approach to education and move towards education as the practice of freedom.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve secured £10,000 of funding from @ukblm! This has come at a crucial moment for Class 13 and we thank Black Lives Matter for recognising the importance of what we’ve trying to achieve.

This thread along with the poll results show what we knew when we founded Class 13: Teachers want to promote equity in their schools, and in order to do so they need access to comprehensive training and support around racism and wider oppressions.

Does your school offer any training to help develop staff in order to deliver sessions on race equality to students? Is this something that we’re failing to recognise as a profession and need to address now? Interested to hear all your thoughts. RT appreciated.

@benglishteach I would love some cpd on this, or even pointers where I can go read. I'm right at the other end of school, the beginning and it's important to be correct. I'd love recommendations for picture books with people of colour. The choice is so limited and to be truthful dated. 1/2

I work in a very predominately white school in the leafy suburbs outside Birmingham. Yesterday my year 12s had a video to watch regarding racism. I couldn’t play the video due to technical difficulties and so we combined groups next door. The Q&A session was interesting. 1/

@benglishteach We are a charity that supports teachers to unpack and unlearn their racial and wider biases so that they can build their anti-racist capacity in the classroom. It's so important to reflect on our own racial knowledge before diving in with students

It is said that schools are a reflection of the society they exist in. Stephen Lawrence day is a time to reflect on the societal racism that enabled his death. Today we educators must ask ourselves, "What am I doing to proactively cultivate equity in my classroom? #edchat
Runnymede Trust@RunnymedeTrust

Today marks 29 years since the senseless murder of Stephen Lawrence. We must use Stephen's legacy to make positive strides to eradicate institutional and systemic racism in the police, and across the UK. Let's serve him that justice. Rest in power, Stephen 🕊️ @sldayfdn
