
🙏 Firefighter/EMT Michael "Mike" Altman Altman was injured on Monday, March 16, 2026, while responding to a 2-11 alarm fire at a four-story apartment building located at 1757 W. North Shore Ave. in the Rogers Park neighborhood. During the operation, Altman fell through the first floor into the basement. While he was rescued by fellow firefighters in less than a minute, he sustained extensive injuries, including critical burns. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition and was pronounced dead on the morning of Tuesday, March 17, 2026. A 32-year-old EMT, Altman had been with the department for nearly two years and was assigned to Truck 47 in Edgewater. a fourth-generation firefighter and the grandson of a former Chicago Fire Commissioner. Mike is not only a dedicated firefighter, but also a husband and father with a young child at home and another baby on the way.
