@chikaunigwe Thanks for this, Chika. I have wondered about this hunger for skin lightness myself for a while. Some of it comes from the period of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, where one’s skin color was instrumentalized as the difference between freedom and unfreedom.

23/I’d like to think that my uncle eventually came to his senses, and that his wife did too because they stayed together and raised children who as far as I can tell have never bleached.

1/ One of my uncles swore years ago that he’d only marry a really light skinned woman. He had no need for dark women, he himself was already as dark as night, he joked. What he wanted, he said, was a yellow sisi so that his children to not be as dark as he was.

I just received a copy of Tragedy and Postcolonial Literature in the mail. Thank you to all my many teachers who throughout my education taught me that the imagination is no one man's country and the only qualifications an abiding curiosity to learn about other worlds.
