AI is amazing but it isn't good enough yet. @Kantrowitz says, below, AI has a sameness problem. The problem is if you hang out here on X all day long we see the sameness. Look at my AI Artist's feed. If you just woke up from a five-year coma you would think they all look amazing. But after watching them for years, like I have (I built the lists of 3,500 AI artists) they all start to get a bit boring. In fact, we've started saying "I see slop." Why? AI shares a huge part of the problem, making everything so amazing, but so do the humans driving them. The stories aren't there, and if they are, then the algorithm and social media bashes them down. @eshear asked us for great stories being told with AI video generation tools, and they are hard to find. Even this morning, judging a video contest where the artists worked for a month on their pieces there were only a couple that made me FEEL anything. New posts on my AI artists' feed appear sometimes four every second. So those who are trying to build brands, and stories, like @trishacode get pushed out of the way quickly. Hers get me to laugh, but my family and friends barely pay attention when I put it on the screen, going back to looking at their phones with memes and dopamine hits. Hers look different from the others but has a tough time finding an audience because we are all are too busy keeping up with the latest news (look at my feed today, way more interesting things happening than at any point in my career). Another problem is the tools themselves make it hard to be weird and unique. Yeah, they are easy to get something quick and amazing out, but increasingly that's not enough to get the algorithms on social media to distribute you. After all, everyone's images and videos look weird and amazing. Weird and amazing gets boring quickly. Then there's also another thing. Humans in AI generated videos still don't look quite "Hollywood quality" in the feed. We're still crossing the "uncanny valley." This is what people in immersive media call the effect when things don't quite look real enough. Yeah, we don't have seven fingers anymore, but things still have an "AI look." With emails and other communication work generated by LLMs still has an unhuman feel to it. A few too many em dashes is only one problem. It's that everything is cold, devoid of passion and human meaning. Or is it that EVERYTHING is so good now that the great stuff doesn't stand out. It's why I'm hungry for another X audio space. At least there things are messy and full of meaning. It's amazing to see all the bots reply to my posts. Same problem. So few of them really add a human story, or real value to the post. The worst get blocked. The best get endured. Or maybe we are all just bored with so many awesome things to play with? On the other hand, it is fun to try tools like @dreamina_ai, which I used to create this by uploading a photo and talking into my microphone for a few seconds. To wrap it all up: maybe we just are spoiled rotten. :-)
