🇬🇭Frederick William Kwasi Akuffo (1937–1979) was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who served as Ghana’s Head of State from 1978 to 1979. A senior army officer, he came to power through a palace coup that removed General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and became Chairman of the Supreme Military Council II. During his brief leadership, Akuffo attempted to restore constitutional rule and ease political tensions in Ghana amid severe economic difficulties. His administration announced plans for a return to civilian governance and lifted certain political restrictions. However, growing public dissatisfaction, economic hardship, and instability weakened his government. On June 4, 1979, Akuffo was overthrown in a military uprising led by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings. He was later tried and executed by firing squad on June 26, 1979, alongside several former senior military officers.
