we are at an adult "pool party" and my husband put on his bathing suit before we came here and I tried to explain to him that no one was actually going to be swimming. anyway, he is now in the pool by himself while everyone else is standing around the edges sipping cocktails.

Apothecary Diaries isn’t trying to have its cast smash through a cultural and historical period of time, it instead puts focus on how a various cast of female characters adapted and survived to such oppressive environment. And plenty of violent injustices are also spelled out.

Apothecary presents all these feminist issues but rarely does anything other than frown at it. They’re posed as uncomfortable facts of life instead of violent injustices. Not asking for a revolt, I liked Tale of Shim Cheong because it grants characters agency in feminism.

Some people watch any show set in a historical time period and expect the main character to have a modern viewpoint of certain issues or try to somehow fix them when they're deeply rooted in the culture (and when it's not even the point of the story)

I cannot take Apothecary Diaries hatred seriously—it’s one of those few popular modern animanga/ln that centralizes women struggles and oppression no matter if they are prostitutes, children, elderly, not “attractive” or gender non-conforming. “Misogynistic propaganda” my ass
