@robertskmiles @ESYudkowsky If the civilization is expanding in all directions at near the speed of light (as it would if it wanted to reach as much of the universe as possible), you would not see those effects until it was very close. The lack of light from an enclosed star would lag the frontier.

@ESYudkowsky The critical consideration is that we should be able to observe grabby aliens via evidence other than being wiped out or not, like big spheres of enclosed or lifted stars?

The Great Silence runs skew to AI alignment issues and gives no evidence about it in either direction. Humane-aligned ASIs would expand out and create star-cities of light and happiness. Clippy would expand out and create paperclips. We see neither. Same puzzle either way.

@lukemcneice @dwarkesh_sp For what it's worth, I think the organic conversation seems more genuine the way Dwarkesh is already doing it. Editing things in after the fact would take something away from it for me.

@dwarkesh_sp I’ve been a panelist and and interviewer and have recognised that I’ll often think of better follow up questions after the optimal moment in a live flow. I assume this is true for most interviewers? If the guest was amenable, a second pass later could be edited to appear fluid.
