Extremely saddened and triggered to see yet another trainee’s life lost to suicide. Contrary to what major academic journals may imply, residents aren’t “complaining” for no reason. Physician suicide is a public health crisis. My heart goes out to the community at my alma mater.

TW: suicide There is an empty corner desk in a resident workroom at GW. Now forever engraved in my mind, that desk is a harrowing reminder of the cost of medical training. In his final words, Dr. William West said that he was simply out of gas, that he had nothing left to give.

Thanks for such amazing tribute to Nakita. She will be truly missed. So sad we can’t see her all-to-familiar smile and quirky mannerisms. I will miss her checking up on me and telling me to take time for myself outside of work. This is painful Sis!

She was actively apart of changing medical culture at her institution. It’s unbelievably sad that’s she’s gone while toxic medical culture persists.

The prioritization of physician wellness is not a passing fad, but a demand. We cannot continue to work within systems that produce the highest rates of suicide. My heart breaks for the family and friends of Dr. Mortimer.

Nakita was a classmate of mine, and an inspiration to all those who knew and worked with her.
She deserved better, and was working to improve the lives of all residents and trainees.

Nakita also was an advocate. She was an active member in SNMA during medical school and our GW White Coats for Black Lives. We protested together in 2020 in DC 📢🪧. (3/x)

She loved a good Afrobeats and Caribbean music party, and was even more excited when Haitian music got its time to shine 🇭🇹💃🏿. We danced, laughed, and learned together.
