Statement from Tucker Neale, President, OhioBasketball Regarding July 13 safety incident at the Kentucky Exposition Center during the Run 4 The Roses Championship. On Sunday, an unfortunate malfunction at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville during the Run 4 The Roses Championships caused a loud disturbance. This led to several individuals shouting “shots fired” while fleeing the venue, which led to panic among guests and participants. This resulted in a mass evacuation, dozens of emergency calls to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), and a full-scale response to the venue. We are relieved to report that once the building was safely evacuated, an investigation found that there was no active shooter, no credible threat, and—most importantly—no one was harmed. A smoke alarm triggered by a duct vent sensor malfunction caused the disturbance, and at no time were any of the participants or guests in any danger. We are deeply grateful for the fast and professional response by on-site security, LMPD, and state security personnel, all of whom acted swiftly to secure the facility and protect everyone in attendance. We recognize the fear and disruption experienced by our participants, spectators, and community members as a result of the facility’s malfunction and the resulting panic. I want to personally reassure all guests: OhioBasketball events are safe and secure, and we are using this incident as an opportunity to take additional steps—effective immediately—to further strengthen that commitment: For all events featuring more than 20 courts at a single venue, we are implementing:     •    On-site bag checks     •    Metal detector screenings at all entrances We are also working closely with Kentucky Venues and local authorities to review our safety protocols and make additional improvements where needed. At OhioBasketball, the safety and well-being of every player, coach, family member, and staff member is—and will always be—our top priority.
