"Thierry left us the way he lived — as a courageous and free man. With his children and mine, we were united around him. Until his final breath," wrote his wife, TF1 journalist Audrey Crespo-Mara. Born on January 6, 1949, in Bourganeuf (Creuse), Thierry Ardisson began his career in advertising, where he created slogans that became legendary, before moving into television. He shook up the French TV landscape starting in the 1980s, eventually becoming one of its most provocative figures with his successful late-night talk shows. Paris’s political and cultural elite flocked to his shows, including Bains de minuit (broadcast from the Bains Douches nightclub), Lunettes noires pour nuits blanches (from the legendary Palace nightclub), and Rive droite / Rive gauche, the first daily cultural TV magazine in France. He also hosted Tout le monde en parle, a weekly show on France 2 (1998–2006) alongside his sidekick Laurent Baffie, followed by Salut les Terriens (2006–2018) on Canal+ and later C8. Always dressed in black and flashing a constant smile, Ardisson delighted in pushing boundaries and throwing his guests off balance. He had a knack for catchy phrases. Rituals like his signature “Good evenings” or “Roll the tape, Serge!” became inseparable from his persona. In 2020, his legacy was cemented with *Arditube*, a YouTube channel launched by the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA), showcasing the impressive television heritage — 35 shows — of a host known for his openly royalist views, relentless work ethic, and a lack of modesty. He didn’t make only friends in the industry: Bernard Pivot once said Ardisson was “so egotistical he thinks he invented vulgarity on television.” Beyond television, he was also a press publisher, did radio, produced series and films, and authored several books, including L’homme en noir, released in May. President Emmanuel Macron awarded him the Legion of Honour in early 2024. Married three times, Thierry Ardisson had three children with musician Béatrice Loustalan.
