⚡ Electrification: Europe’s Competitive Edge Jan Rosenow, speaking at this week’s EU Energy Council, highlighted a key vulnerability in Europe’s energy system: fossil fuel dependency. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, European industry has paid up to five times more for energy than the US. Electrification could cover 78% of industrial energy use, according to Agora Industry. With nearly half of Europe’s electricity now renewable, electrification offers efficiency gains and boosts competitiveness for European businesses. Challenges remain: - Energy taxation keeps costs high. - Grid connections can take years. - Supply chains are still scaling. Policy tools are emerging. The EU is preparing the world’s first electrification auction, aimed at supporting SMEs and high-temperature industrial processes. Fiscal reform and shared grid access are also under discussion. On October 20 the EU Energy Ministers will meet in Luxembourg for the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy (TTE) Council where electrification will take centre stage. The Danish Presidency’s background note highlights: ⚡ The large technical potential for industrial electrification (as underlined by the Agora Industry report). ⚡ The need for supportive framework conditions from de-risking private investment and narrowing the electricity-gas price gap, to expanding grids and enhancing flexibility. ⚡ The importance of leveraging recent Electricity Market Design reforms, ensuring flexible and cost-effective electrification becomes central to Europe’s industrial decarbonisation pathway. As Member States prepare to discuss how best to accelerate electrification across sectors, the @Elec_All calls for: ✅ A coherent EU framework that enables affordable electrification. ✅ Clear incentives and financial mechanisms to scale industrial electrification. ✅ Rapid implementation of grid and flexibility reforms that unlock new demand. Solar and wind are powering global electricity growth In the first half of 2025: ☀️ Solar grew by a record +306 TWh (+31%) covering 83% of demand growth. 💨 Wind added +97 TWh (+7.7%). Together, renewables overtook coal for the first time in history now 34.3% of global electricity. 📉 Fossil generation dipped slightly (-0.3%), with coal falling in both China and India. 🌱 Power sector emissions plateaued despite demand rising +2.6%. “Electrification without flexibility = system failure.” That’s the warning from Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. With EVs, heat pumps, and overall electrification expanding fast, our grids simply can’t operate rigidly anymore. Europe’s grids need urgent upgrades to connect renewables and enable electrification. The @EU_Commission estimates €1.2 trillion in grid investments by 2040. Ahead of the EU Grids Package (expected Q4 2025), the European Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) recommends: ✅ Stronger regulatory oversight of grid planning ✅ Streamlined selection and monitoring of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) within Trans-European Energy Networks (TEN-E) ✅ Smarter scenario development and gap identification of infrastructure needs ✅ Recognition of non-wire alternatives (such as demand-side flexibility) as cost-efficient solutions. The message is clear: upgrading Europe’s grids is essential for secure electrification and it must go hand in hand with flexibility to deliver a cost-efficient clean energy transition. In 8 of 17 EU countries, electricity is taxed at least 3x more than gas. Poland taxes electricity 7x more than gas, while Belgium, 6x more, new research from the European Heat Pump Association shows, noting how the two countries have the lowest heat pump uptake in Europe. Meanwhile, Sweden backs electricity and has long led in heat pump adoption and Ireland, where heat pump deployment is growing fast, has recently rebalanced taxes. The European power sector’s reality check is in! Yesterday we joined @Eurelectric's launch of the hashtag#PowerBarometer25 in Brussels – a packed event that put power system flexibility at the core of the discussions. The panel discussion - featuring Eva Chamizo Llatas (@iberdrola), Erkki MAILLARD (EDF), MEP @tsvetypenkova (S&D), Will Broad (LDES Council), @MWorsdorfer, and guided by @DonatelloPiras – made one thing clear: Europe must plan smarter, act together, and optimise system costs if we are to build a secure, affordable, and decarbonised power system. Key takeaways from @kristianruby's presentation and the interactive discussions included: - Data centers are driving new concentrated demand, while electrification rates remain stubbornly low. - Clean power is soaring – 72% of EU electricity so far this year comes from clean power. - Industrial output is finally showing signs of recovery in the EU, driven by Spain, Sweden & Finland. - Prices have dropped by 64% on average versus 2022 and the share of expensive hours (above €150/MWh) was down to just 6.9% in 2024. Negative prices on the other hand are noticeably on the rise. - Flexibility will make or break the energy transition: from demand-side response to long-duration storage, we need more flex. In her State of the Union speech at the European Parliament, President @vonderleyen made clear: "We are now on the path to energy independence. But energy bills are still a real source of anxiety for millions of Europeans. And costs are still structurally high for industry. We know what drove prices up: dependency on Russian fossil fuels. So it is time to get rid of dirty Russian fossil fuels. And we know, what brings prices down: clean homegrown energy." The @Elec_All fully supports this call. Replacing imported fossil fuels with clean, electrified solutions is the fastest way to secure affordable energy, strengthen Europe’s independence, and build a resilient economy for citizens and industries alike.

Implementation is now crucial to avoid the risk of falling behind our climate and competitiveness goals. #Electrification is not just a climate tool. It's about building a stronger, more competitive, and cost-efficient energy future: ✅ Lower costs for households and businesses ✅ Greater system resilience ✅ Stronger industrial competitiveness Yet, Europe’s electrification rate has stagnated in recent years.
