Amongst several things, it identified that PA education was insufficient to see & treat undifferentiated and complex patients.
A ~year on, Streeting still hasn’t implemented the recommendations, despite patient harm & deaths

@bswud The supervising consultants should be struck off too. They knowingly placed patients in harms way and are responsible for this debacle. It is a disgrace.

- there is only ONE nurse in Europe allowed to perform ERCP (usually carried out only by specially trained surgeons), in Rotherham in England
- this nurse regularly introduced himself as ‘a consultant interventional radiologist’ to patients, obfuscating the fact he’s a consultant NURSE
- even his supervising surgeons were not themselves trained in ERCP as it’s so specialised!
- in one case he continued with surgery despite the supervising doctor instructing him to stop
- he made mistakes dosing sedatives and I n the procedure itself, leading to the death or harm of at least 68 patients
Doctors wanting to perform ERCP must pass rigorous speciality exams and enter special training programmes under close supervision. Why do we have lesser standards for nurses?
Patients must now routinely ask their ‘doctors’ if they are actually doctors if they want proper care in the uk!

Doctor substitution is as cynical as it is illogical & only worked for so long as the public didn’t know!
Now the regulator, the government & ESPECIALLY the Colleges need to explain playing fast & loose with peoples’ health

⛴⚓️ HMS Sheffield have a new anaesthetic lead for their PAA programme . The ad went out after the definitive RCoA scope document. The ad was not sent by an anaesthetist nor discussed with the dept.

@anaesthetic_spr @nhsswipecard A follow up FOI is needed re rationale/justification/minutes of discussion to support these decisions of equivalence. Bet they don’t exist, exposing total irrelevance of these statements.

3) You state on B.Uni website that you want people who don't want to be Drs. You also cannot have a 'medical career' without a medical degree

Credit to @ConorGogarty and @WalesOnline for pursuing this. @AneurinBevanUHB allowed their physician associates to perform invasive procedures on patients, including chest drains, central lines and nerve blocks.
It was only a matter of time until a patient came to harm.

It's a slam dunk that the introduction went along the lines of "hi, I'm XXXX and I'll be doing your LP today" with "I'm one of the team" as an each way bet

Day one pay in central London:
🔸Newly qualified Doctor:
£20.36 / hour
🔹Newly qualified Physician’s Assistant:
£28.86 / hour
