Het idee dat je het Iraanse regime uit sancties moet halen om zogenaamd het leven van Iraniërs te verbeteren, is niet alleen naïef, het is een regelrechte ontkenning van de realiteit. De armoede in Iran is geen ongeluk en ook niet simpelweg het gevolg van westerse sancties. Het is het directe resultaat van keuzes van het regime. Terwijl er miljarden binnenkwamen uit olie en gas, koos de leiding er bewust voor om dat geld niet in hun eigen bevolking te investeren, maar in militaire macht en ideologische expansie. Jarenlang zijn enorme bedragen gepompt in ondergrondse raketinstallaties, geavanceerde wapensystemen en drones. Tegelijkertijd stroomde geld naar buitenlandse milities en groeperingen zoals Hamas, Hezbollah en de Houthi’s. Dat is geen speculatie, dat is beleid. Dus laten we stoppen met doen alsof meer geld automatisch bij de Iraanse bevolking terechtkomt. Dat is aantoonbaar niet gebeurd en er is geen enkele reden om te geloven dat dat ineens zou veranderen. Het idee dat het regime plots “onze vriend” wordt zodra er geld binnenkomt, is niet alleen naïef, maar gevaarlijk kortzichtig. Je financiert daarmee exact dezelfde structuren die de regio destabiliseren en hun eigen bevolking onderdrukken. Wie dit soort voorstellen blijft herhalen, negeert óf bewust de feiten, óf weigert ze onder ogen te zien. In beide gevallen is het schadelijk. Mensen verdienen eerlijkheid, geen propaganda verpakt als optimisme. Het Iraanse volk lijdt niet primair door sancties, maar door een regime dat keer op keer kiest voor macht, ideologie en buitenlandse invloed boven het welzijn van zijn eigen mensen.
