Today, on Ascension Eve, at Whitby, the bailiff of the manor of Fyling will build the Horngarth or Penny Hedge - a ceremony that has existed since at least the twelfth century! youtube.com/watch?v=DeEKKb…

#DigChester, Day 9, Annabel: Today was a little challenging as the sunshine has baked the soil rock solid. Ugi & I managed to find a possible Roman posthole & good progress was made on the Roman ditch. We had good tunes to get us through! 🧵 1/2 @cwacmuseums @uochester

#DigChester Day 7: Alex - today our group took our first 'levels', recording the height of a new layer full of slate before digging it. It layer produced our largest piece of pottery yet (of imported German stoneware), found by Casper, who's still on form! @cwacmuseums @uochester

#DigChester, Daisy: day 6 at the big brother dig! Annabel & I finished our section of the Roman ditch & recorded it, drawing a profile & description. Kayleigh finally found a bit of pot (Roman samian ware!) & Tom again sat in a hole looking whimsical! @uochester @cwacmuseums
