“Whatever their aspirations in life, reading won’t be the thing that holds them back” - Alec Mills, Headteacher, Twynyrodyn Primary School. Watch and read this excellent ITV report on how Alec’s school is one of few exceptions to the rule in Wales. Also featuring @garein and @robrandel who have been raising the alarm for years. @RhysWilliamsTV has gone to great lengths to document the problem and explain the difference between evidence-based and ineffective teaching methods and the life-long impacts on children who receive the latter.

An outstanding report on how reading is taught in wales. In Scotland, we have EXACTLY the same issues We have a reading crisis. It is no fault of the teachers but the decision makers and programmes the teachers are given to teach. They are fundamentally flawed

I'm a big fan of sentence combining and imitation. My 5th graders are learning about prepositional phrases. Embed vocabulary if you can & encourage Ss to use vocabulary that was previously learned like the word emphatic.
