In Scotland, we have EXACTLY the same issues
We have a reading crisis.
It is no fault of the teachers but the decision makers and programmes the teachers are given to teach.
They are fundamentally flawed

I'm a big fan of sentence combining and imitation. My 5th graders are learning about prepositional phrases. Embed vocabulary if you can & encourage Ss to use vocabulary that was previously learned like the word emphatic.

LLMs challenge Chomskyan view suggesting language is learned via statistical associations, not innate rules. This has implications for balancing explicit teaching & implicit learning in language & reading instruction, especially for multilingual students.
