The Cairo Bulletin (Cairo, Ill.) reported #OnThisDay in 1909 about a fire that broke out in a coal mine near Cherry, Ill. About 500 men and boys were working that day, and half of them perished. The Cherry Mine Disaster is one of the worst mining disasters in US history.
