Statement on the Decision of the U.S. President to Begin Procedures for Designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a Terrorist Organization
The #Muslim_Brotherhood affirms its complete rejection of the decision issued by U.S. President Donald #Trump to begin procedures for designating the group in #Egypt as a terrorist organization — a decision that contradicts reality, disregards facts, and is linked to the group’s steadfast stance in support of the Palestinian people’s right to independence and in rejection of the genocidal wars and massacres that the Zionist occupation has consistently perpetrated against Palestinians.
The Muslim Brotherhood emphasizes the following:
First: This decision targets political entities that operate through peaceful means recognized by all institutions of the free world, and that uphold the values of justice and the right of peoples to self-determination and to choose their representatives and leaders. Such a designation casts doubt on the credibility of the stated U.S. policies that claim to defend freedoms and democratic values.
Second: The Muslim Brotherhood has a clean record and a clear history and is not concerned with any accusations of terrorism. The group has always been, and remains, an integral part of the Egyptian national fabric. It has never resorted to violence to attain power nor called for it. No acts harming state security or sovereignty have ever been recorded against it throughout its history.
The group founded a political party that won the first free and transparent parliamentary and presidential elections in modern Egyptian history, in which President Dr. #Mohamed_Morsi was elected. His year in office was a year distinguished by civil liberties, as acknowledged by international institutions, including the report presented to the UK House of Commons in 2015, which affirmed that the group acts as a barrier against extremist currents.
Third: The decision, which bases its accusations on the group’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to liberation from occupation, represents a prelude to targeting all active movements and living forces in the region—indeed, all free people around the world who rose by the millions across Muslim and many other countries to reject the genocide in #Palestine.
Fourth: The decision constitutes a renewed attempt to divert attention from the ongoing genocide against civilians in Palestine and from those responsible for it. Instead of supporting international efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable, the U.S. administration has chosen to shield them—evidenced by the fact that the Prime Minister of the occupation, who is wanted for arrest and prosecution, was among the first to welcome the decision.
Fifth: The decision reflects a clear bias toward authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, which have long records of human rights violations. It sends a negative message to Arab and Muslim peoples that there is no place in the world for those who defend freedom through peaceful means, thereby feeding into extremist currents.
We affirm that this direction will not endure, for the American people, civil society institutions, the press, and free nations around the world are all capable of distinguishing between reform movements and human rights violators.
Sixth: The Muslim #Brotherhood will never abandon its support for the Palestinian people’s right to liberation and national independence, regardless of the sacrifices.
Seventh: The decision comes amid escalating waves of #Islamophobia and attempts to target Muslims worldwide, coinciding with rising tides of hatred and exclusion.
In conclusion, we call on all who believe in the values of #justice and #freedom around the world to stand against attempts to criminalize peaceful political activity and to defend the right of peoples to #independence and #dignity.
We also affirm that our approach is one of constructive dialogue, and that we remain open to all serious discussions at the Arab and Western levels to clarify our reformist and peaceful methodology aimed at achieving prosperity and development for societies.
The Muslim Brotherhood -by the grace of God- will remain steadfast, adhering to its principles and overcoming these attempts with even greater strength and resilience.
