Having both sides working properly and constantly creating danger with Lamine on the right and Nico Williams on the left has always been one of Spain’s biggest strengths under De la Fuente, so their struggles against Cape Verde yesterday aren’t that surprising if you think about it.
Especially against such a well-organised, deep defensive block, it makes sense they struggled to find space.
Even when Lamine and Nico aren’t directly creating chances, just their presence stretches defences and opens gaps for players like Pedri, Olmo, Fabián Ruiz or Oyarzabal to exploit through the middle and break these blocks.
So there’s no need for them to panic after that game. Once those two are fully back and especially if Nico regains his form with Spain, the team should be fine. Many champions have had shaky openings anyway, the last winners are a good example.
