Setting it to default lets your device play nice with the local DHCP resolver so you can clear captive portals. Once you are authenticated, fire your VPN back up. Your DNS requests are encrypted again, and the local router is blind.

When my VPN dropped, Chrome tried to fall back to Cloudflare DoH. The hotel router quietly dropped the packets, breaking the Internet connection. The fix? Go into your (ChromeOS) settings and set Secure DNS back to "Network default".

Ever had your Internet completely die on hotel Wi-Fi when you turn your VPN off, even though you can still ping external IPs? I just spent way too long debugging this on my Chromebook. The culprit: hostile networks blocking DoH (DNS-over-HTTPS).
