Dexter Lawrence contract with Bengals will be 3-for-70 ($23.3M/year). That is below market and team friendly. There are 9 DTs making more per year, and Chris Jones is at $31.7M per year as an older player.

While it reads as a 1 year extension worth $28M, that’s not the full story. Lawrence is owed $20M in 2026; $22M in 2027; and now $28M in 2028. That breaks down as $70M over 3 years for an AAV of $23.333M for a 28 year old game wrecking DT. Compare that to another player (older) wanting an extension. Again, just a great move by Cincinnati. 3 years of team control for one of the best DTs in the league and their average pay is only $23.333M. Interested to see the breakdown of the 1 year extension. There simply cannot be a negative spin on this.

As a part of our draft prep, we have scored all players drafted since 2015 on NFL production (Career Approximate Value and PFF grades). Dexter Lawrence ranks #1 of the 218 DTs in the database. There’s an argument to be had that the Bengals traded for the best DT in the NFL.

The #Bengals deal for Dexter Lawrence is pending a physical, obviously. But this is the most out-of-character move by this franchise in a generation. The urgency and all-in talk this offseason amid years of defensive frustration finally produced a change in philosophy.
