One of Britain’s most familiar trees, present for thousands of years. Ash arrived in Britain after the last Ice Age, around 8,000 years ago, and quickly became a defining part of the landscape. Fast-growing, tall, and open in form, its canopy lets light reach the ground, giving life to what grows beneath. Traditionally used for tool handles, carts, and even early aircraft, valued for its strength and flexibility. In folklore, it was seen as a tree of protection and connection between worlds. Now threatened by ash dieback. A reminder that even the most familiar parts of the landscape are not guaranteed.
